okay, first off:
1. my theory is based on the character selection screen that you can see in demovids.
(f.e. in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad-SnIBzkR8)
2. i know this is almost pure speculation, but i'm really interested in your opinions about this.

alright then:

so there are 23 characters officially confirmed, but we don't know how many there will be.... or do we? thanks to the characters selection screen we can calculate how many brawlers there will be.. (i think).
after measuring the size of the screen and the size of each charactersquare i came to the conclusion that there will (pretty sure) be 25 characters.
okay, on my computer monitor they sizes are like that:

length of the screen: 37cm
length of 1 charactersqure: 4,3cm
rows: 3
randombutton: 1

length of the screen / length of 1 charsquare = number of chars in 1 row

37 / 4,3 = 8,60

chars per row * rows = number of characters
(i know, it's a bit illogical to keep calculating with 8,60 since there can't be a 0,60 charfield, but let's just ignore that for a second)

8,60 * 3 = 25,80

now, let's be optmistic: 25,80 ~~ 26

but wait, there's a randombutton as well:

26 - 1 = 25

okay, since this is a calculation every elementary school student can do, i presume there's no need to explain any of the calculationsteps any more.

23 characters are already confirmed, but of course, some of the veterans from ssbm are still missing.
f.e. what about luigi? i personally can't imagine that they wouldn't put him into brawl, now that he got a move set that's more different from mario's.
and there still is jigglypuff. this is also a classic character. it's always been hidden, it kinda always was the first char everyone unlocked.
sure, there are some more veterans that deserve the brawl spot (c. falcon, ganondorf, falco, etc.) but imo the first two just have to be in it, so let's add jiggly and luigi to the roster.

well, that's it. 25 characters that would mathematical perfectly fit into the roster. what do you guys think about this? could there be a bit truth in it, or am i just being pessimistic? X_x

p.s.: if some sentences are grammatically a murder, please excuse that. i've got a D- in english Oo

edit: uh, sry, totally forgot that there's still another 3rd-party-character tba. let's just take jiggly out and replace it with any suitable char.

The character slots will definitely be smaller in the final selection screen. I mean, the stage select screen they had there didn't even have enough room for the stages that we know.

Yeah, pretty much. What's stopping them from just sizing down the character icons?

That was just a DEMO. The original game will have smaller slots, I suppose there will be 40 more or less.

no....sakurai said there would be at LEAST 40, but since the delay, it could be more
When did he say 40 char. at least? Really where's a link, and if you can't find one then why do people keep saying it.

Jag förstår inte. Vad sa du?
Okay...according to your theory...with 23 characters revealed...about half newcomers...more than half of the Melee roster would get the boot so we can only get two more newcomers...YOU FAIL...
