Changing button configuration dilemma

How common is it to change the button configuration in a Super Smash game? As this is a social game it's common, (in theory), to head over to a buddy and play on her/his console. Now, if you are used to a costum button configuration you would be at a disadvantage if those you play with uses the default setup and don't want to wait for you to change your settings and having to set it back afterwards. The dude who owned super smash when I was little wasn't really my friend, but he invited people to play quite often and I jumped on the game train too.

I know this is a pessimistic view of the social part of this game, but I like being prepared for the worst, even if it isn't a big issue. But I don't know if this really is an issue at all now that we got online play. Should I change the button setup to suit me, or should I get used to the default settings? I've always tried to do the latter, in case of situations from my childhood. What do you do? And will your mindset change for SSB4?

Changing your settings takes like a minute, two tops. Anyone who thinks that's long is really impatient.

Well, if you have an issue with the controls, change it. The point of a game is to have fun, and if you're getting uncomfortable with the controls, it's good to change them. No one will blame you, everyone changes them once in their life, it's why you have the ability to. People have different needs after all.

Heck, I plan on doing that myself (mostly to get rid of Tap Jump).

Controls take 2 seconds to configure. They can wait.

I'm actually still a bit baffled that tap-jump is on by default, while even my casual gamer friends have disliked it in past Smash-games and so do most people on the internet, it seems. Obviously no big deal since we can just turn it off, but still a bit of a strange decision.

I would assume to give players more options. Since there are some that use tap jump.

Probably because it's easier to just deal with it if you don't use it, than suddenly being forced to get used to a button if you do.

It's a legacy thing, since Melee and 64 use it and don't have control options.

But yea, as has been said, just change 'em. If your friend can't wait, that's their problem.

To be fair, it's more inconvenient on the 3DS since you'd have to change after every round, but it's no big deal on a console game.

If anyone doesn't let you adjust your controls, they're a jerk.

Since you set them to a name, you only have to do it once anyway.
I agree. Setting controller configurations to a name was one of my favorite things that we got in Brawl. Since it takes so little, I don't see why anyone should oppose to letting you do it one time..

Besides that, the default configuration is basically the best way to play either way. I can't think of what anyone would want to change that can be debilitating if you don't do it.. except for tap jump, of course. Bleagh, tap jump :p

That being said, in SSBB, I did change Z to attack and Y to grab, from their respective grab and jump defaults. That's just 'cause I'm weird, though ^_^

All I do is take Tap Jump OFF. And that literally takes 2 seconds. I despise tap jump because I love up tilts and I always press up a little too hard.

But I have a friend where he would swap the Jump and Grab buttons. He would set Y to grab and Z to jump. He just thought it was easier for him that way lol.

So, the button confuguration on the 3DS demo is weird, but is it really bad? Okay, L and R should be switched, but having the jump buttons on the tip of the thumb and attack buttons directly underneath seems convenient compared to having both on the side of the thumb. Or is the reach better with the old ways? It's actually with so little space between the buttons compared to the gcc, where I couldn't really reach the "B" as fast after jumping. Makes me have wanna try out the Wii U Pro corntroller to see if the abxy button placement actually could be better. Doesn't seem too bad to have the c-stick above instead of below either.

I never understood the c-stick dilemma. Some said it should be used for smash attacks, while others said it was for n00bs. I never actually used it for anything myself.

Most fighting games have Tap Jump on, and it feels really intuitive. And the ABXY setup will ALWAYS be better than Gamecube's.

For me, it seems like tap-jumping just takes away from an input you could've made on the control-stick, like say Jump and FAir is quicker with X/Y + left/right on stick + A than having to readjust the control stick from up to right before pressing attack. Bare in mind, it's probably only mere milliseconds faster, but still.

I can see why. Jump would have its own finger. It's one of the reasons I like arcade sticks as opposed to pads when playing fighting games.

For those complaining about tap jumping, I will say one positive thing about it is that it feels less sensitive for the 3DS game at least. At least from playing the demo, I had less problems with it compared to past games. Though I'm not sure if it's only for the 3DS version due to the circle pad.

I'll still probably turn it off, just for consistency sake.
