Challenge Mode? (Unlock Characters)

I was just wondering if you can unlock characters in the Challenge Mode or just trophies, CD's... Masahiro said you have to hit the glass (??) with the golden hammer and behind that galss (??) are there any characters (playable)?

characters are probably behind unbrekable glass I.E. you have to achieve the conditions.

But it is possible, considering that Sakurai says some squares can't even be broken by a Golden Hammer.
