I have found that whenever I try to chain throw (Especial as Marth, Ice Climbers and CF) I will often shield instead of grab... what am I doing wrong??

This might be me, but keeping my eyes focused on my character's animation during a chain throw helps me time inputs better. My target I'm chain throwing is easy enough to see outside of the small area of focus I have

Yeah, it's all about timing. I just watch my opponent and chaingrab to a certain rhythm. It takes practice.

When you hold Z down before utilized frames are over, then as soon as you are out of utilized frames, you have a.. "buffered" light-shield. In order to actually get a grab out of Z, you have to not be doing something that prevents you from grabbing at that specific moment (so you can't be in a move's lag or etc.)

What I tend to do when chain grabbing with Marth is: after throwing my opponent into the air, I time my next grab for when they're just above my Marth's head. If they fall too quickly or not high enough, you'll have to put some more damage into them before the chainthrow works.
