Casual Tier List

I had a conversation with a friend of mine a little while ago that went something like this:

Friend: "I'm going to be playing some friends of mine in super smash bros melee. How do I win?"

Me: "Ask him if he knows what a wavedash is. If he says "No", pick marth and press that little yellow stick in the direction that he's in. If he says "Yes", you might as well walk of the edge of the stage."

This got me wondering what everyone's opinions are on casual gamers and how easily they can just pick up a character and beat people with little skill.

It kind of depends on what you define as a "casual gamer" so I'll give my definition. I think a casual melee player should know that left and right on the control stick mave you move that respective direction, how to jump, that pressing a or b and a or b and a direction puts out an attack in approximately the direction that you press, how to shield, how to roll, and may or may not know how to grab.

I searched for threads like this before but what I saw seemed like they were pointing to a few characters and then saying everyone else was unviable. I want to see if I can get an approximate actual tier list. Why? For fun.

To start, I guess we can just look at the characters that would be at the top of this tier list and I think that could include marth, peach, and kirby. C. Falcon would probably be near the bottom because all any casual wants to do is falcon punch and even casuals can punish that.

Anyways, discuss and have fun.

Casual gamers aren't usually going to be able to do anything technical, so the safest assumption is that they only know basic/abstract strategies. They might play on feel much more than on calculation

Casual gamers would know the surface level stuff of the game, like its controls. Competitive gamers have interest in playing competitively and know deeper stuff on how to win

Fox, Falco, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, and especially Ice Climbers of the viable 8 would drop to somewhere in the bottom half for a casual tier list. They're more difficult to use than most other characters. I put Puff there because her aerial jumps are weird and casuals might not understand it easily

Marth might be 1 of the best because of fsmash. That's it. Sheik would be up high too because if they know how good dthrow is, they can do simple effective combos. Peach would fall somewhere in the middle of the tier list. She needs floats, CC and turnip abuse, but dsmash might be enough for a noob to do some damage. Her dash attack is also good

IDK about the non top 8, except Mewtwo would be even worse than Ice Climbers for them and even Pichu and Kirby

Scrubs seem to like Roy for some reason, let's put him in S tier.
While this thread is just for fun, I still wanted to make it more of a tier list than a probability distribution of likely characters for a casual to pick. Like a character that has an easily abusable move(s) that most casuals won't punish

Edit: Started thinking about projectiles. Projectiles are definitely harder for casuals to deal with. This would put doc pretty high because his pills cause a decnt amount of hitstun and the bouncy nature of them make aiming easy for n00bs and hard for n00bs to dodge. Tell them to flick the c-stick down while on the ground near the enemy and you've got yourself a reliable kill move.

I don't think anyone wants to bother making a whole list. Feel free to do so yourself however.

A list for casual players would be based off how easy they are, so I'd put Sheik at the top, Luigi pretty high.

Even without floats and such, wouldn't D-smash be super strong?

This is basically how I viewed the characters when the game first came out and I was five (AKA the scrubbiest tier list possible):

SS
1:kirbymelee:He can fly, so you can't kill him. Also, you can use side-B and up-B to hit people, and you're invincible while you're a rock.
S
2:marthmelee:His counter is really good, and his side-B does multiple hits.
3:roymelee:He's like Marth but he's weird.
4:pikachumelee:Down-B is pretty good because it hits people that are above you, but his recovery is weird and hard to use.
5:pichumelee:He's like Pikachu but he hurts himself and he sucks more.
A
6:foxmelee:You can spam lasers at people and use his side-B, but you'll never hit anyone with his up-B.
7:falcomelee:He's the same as Fox except he can't do lasers as fast.
8:icsmelee:Side-B is really good, but once one of them dies up-B doesn't do anything anymore.
B
9:younglinkmelee:His arrows are on fire, so he's better than normal Link. Also he's faster.
10:linkmelee:All of his projectiles are really slow and hard to hit with, but up-B is reallly good because it has a lot of knockback.
11:falconmelee:He runs too fast so you just jump off the stage. Falcon Punches are good though.
12:ganondorfmelee:He's just a clone of Captain Falcon.
13:luigimelee:Up-B doesn't even take you horizontally, so if you're offstage you just have to die. But he's cooler than Mario so that's a reason to use him.
C
14:drmario:He's the same as Mario, but he has a doctorate so I guess he's better.
15:mariomelee:You can spam Mario Tornado and up-B, which is good. The cape doesn't do any damage, though, so it sucks.
16:samusmelee:Only good in free-for-alls when you can charge up your laser without being attacked. Without that, all she can do is try to hit people with up-B.
17:peachmelee:Toad doesn't do any damage to people, and other than that all she can do is throw vegetables.
18:jigglypuffmelee:He can fly, but he doesn't have a recovery move, and down-B just makes him fall asleep.
D
19:dkmelee:His recovery sucks, so all he can do is spam down-B.
20:sheikmelee:The chain doesn't do anything, and her recovery is just she disappears and then comes back and falls. Goes "tu" when she jumps, which is annoying.
21:bowsermelee:Fire breath is good, but he's really slow and his recovery sucks.
F
22:mewtwomelee:He's weird and half of his B-moves don't do anything. All he can do is spam Shadow Ball.
23:zeldamelee:Up-B and neutral-B don't even do any damage, and down-B just turns her into Sheik.
24:nessmelee:You have to be really good to get back on stage with his up-B, so it's pretty much useless. Down-B and neutral-B don't do anything and the other guy just hits you while you're using them.
25:yoshimelee:Doesn't even have a recovery move. Eggs are impossible to aim. You can try to hit people with down-B but it's hard.

I never got Mr. Game & Watch when I first played the game, so I don't know what I would have thought of him.
Also, I'm pretty sure what happened was I pressed A, and then B, and I saw that the A attack didn't look as powerful as the B attack, so I assumed that A attacks were useless.

necroTaxonomist necroTaxonomist Thats a good list, but you forgot peach's downsmash, sheik's f-smash hits 2 times, and mewtwo's neutral b hurts the opponent while its charging, so they should move up. Also have you seen the marios' and bowser's smash attacks?

Fox is actually a solid character for very low level beginners. He has upsmash and forward smash that are pretty good, and he's also got a ridiculous up air and he can laser people from across the stage, and an amazing recovery

When I first started playing this game in our circle of friends these are the character we thought were the best -

Jigglypuff
Falcon
Ganon
Marth

We knew the Spacies and Peach/Sheik were really good but we didn't have as much fun playing with them.
No one bothered with ICs.

We figured Pichu and Bowser were dead last, Kirby was so slow but he had such good edge guarding.
