Cape Gliding

I mained mario in Melee but I kinda shyed away from him to use sonic PT and Link. So I've been hearing a lot of things about cape gliding and I'm not sure how it works, can someone explain for me? Thanks

The Cape Glide is when you use the cape while running towards the edge of the stage. This will cause Mario to “levitate” while doing the Cape animation. The distance varies with how soon you use the Cape while while running.
