I've been trying to learn how to wavedash probably since early August, and I still face these problems: 1. I always shield after, and 2. I always perform a jump, I don't just glide across the ground. If anyone wants to help me learn how to do it, that'd be greatly appreciated. I understand the timing, because a friend of mine irl taught me it, but I can't seem to input it into a controller, and he doesn't want to help me. I really want to do this to finally be on par with my friends and enter local tournaments, but I seriously can't. I main Ness btw.

1. you're holding shield too long after you touch the ground
2. if you're coming off the ground, you're pushing shield too late
all i can really say is to keep trying different timings until you find it and train your fingers to be consistent. but even without it, don't let that be a hindrance to going to locals anyway

Try doing it with Luigi and practicing it with him (he has the most noticable and the easiest wavedash). Once you have it down with him, you should then try it with Ness. If not, you should still try just trying to wavedash between stocks in friendlies. (Just not so a failed wavedash would be easily punishable)

Actually on 2, it's more likely he's pressing shield too early. You can press it too early and have your input eaten by your jump startup animation.

First off, don't worry! It takes a long time and a lot of practice to get it down. After almost a year of playing competitively, I still mess up 10% of the time.

2. If you jump without air dodging AT ALL, then you're pressing shield too early. If you jump a bit, then air dodge into the ground, you're pressing it too late.

I also recommend practicing with Luigi (because his is the most obvious). Keep in mind that wavedash timings are different by character. Some have shorter jump squats (Pikachu) and some have longer (Bowser). With Bowser, you would have to air dodge a bit later, but with PIkachu you have to do it sooner. However, Ness and Luigi have the same 4 frame jump squat if memory serves, so that shouldn't effect you too much.

He has the longest. it doesnt make it easier

it is in no way easier than anyone else with the same jump timing.

People should practise with their character, not others.
Practicing with Luigi gives you a better idea of how good of a wavedash you did. It's hard to tell if you did a good wavedash with Zelda/Peach, because a bad and good wavedash are almost identical for them

hey so this is completely random and unrelated to wavedashing, but I couldn't find an appropriate thread. I was wondering if melee plays any differently on a wii than on a gc.

I was able to do it from day one, from just understanding the theory.

Hold down, and slightly to one side. Then, just keep jumping with Y or X and dodging right after until you get the timing right.

Have you tried doing it in training mode with speed slowed down?

Are you using the Fullset? For some reason, I have to really try to wavedash on Wifi-Set.

You should start a NEW thread in that case. That said, it's the exact same.
Thanks. I didn't start a new thread because I figured a question that simple wasn't worthy of its own thread. Either way, it's not a big deal. Thanks again!
