Can't Pause?

Couldn't find anything from a search, so not sure if this is a known issue - for some reason, any time I play Brawl with a gamecube controller the game just doesn't register any input from the start button.

Pausing with the Wii remote works fine. I've tested multiple controllers, and while none have been working playing Brawl, pressing start on all of the gamecube controllers has worked in every other game.
