Can you pair up with a friend online and play team battle?

Hey,
Pretty much as the title says,

I want to know if it's possible to join a game in For Fun/For Glory (choose team battle), then have your friend enter the match?

I have me and my friend that have been practicing heaps lately but we only play together online.. so can we pair up online and vs others? Or do we have to be playing on the same console in order to team up?

You cannot on 3DS.

However, on Wii U, if you enter those modes with a second controller connected, you're given the opition to bring a friend along I believe.

Might be wrong as I don't own a Wii U but I know it's something like that.

Sadly, you have to be on the same console to do that.

That's a shame, hopefully it comes out as an update soon where this kind of mode is available!
