Sakurai has stated that playing brawl with people outside your friend list will prevent you from using your taunts (which would've been the means in which these players could communicate)

I challenge you to invent an alternate means of communication to get around this barrier!

*edit #3* -- On the update where Smash goes Wi-Fi Sakurai says:

"The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand."

--My interpretation of this is quite simple. I believe this means that in the Wi-Fi mode you will be able to set a maximum distance for your matches. From here most people will quickly realize the benefit of playing people shorter distances away from you (less lag.) How does this relate to my thread? --Well I'll tell you!

--Say you live in a kind of small area, like me, I live in Vermont. I'm guessing there will be about 500-700 brawlers within my immediate county. If I'm going to be playing brawl on-line a lot with random people from my area, there is of course the chance that I will most likely see the same person twice. I will know because I will recognize their fighting style and be like, 'oh this guy, i own him' or 'o snap this guy iz teh shizz!' I mean, when you've got 40-50characters with 4-6 alt costumes each, it'll be pretty simple to tell if it's the same person or not. Anyway, the point of this edit is to just show y'all that pending on where you live (esp. if it's somewhere less populated than where I live) you will most likely recognize the same brawlers over n over in anonymous on-line play.

So, I predict that there will most likely be a need for an online brawl code language.

The point of this thread is not to speculate on how this idea would work like, right away at the start of brawl or something. The point is to further discuss and creatively revise / simplify this code and create a means of alternate communication with those who would otherwise remain anonymous.

*edit* say if you're having a fun battle with someone and you really want to find out who they are. Using a universal code language you could ask for their wii #, their aim s/n, or the name they go by (on forums/online) or w.e so that then you can find them to play again later.

Also, this would be a good way for pros to get their name around n shtuff :-)

The easiest way I see doing this would be assigning a letter to each of the following:

basic attack, tilts, speciels, & aerials

1+3+4+5 = 13

When facing toward the opponent:

A --> Basic attack
B --> D-tilt
C --> F-tilt
D --> U-tilt
E --> B-Neutral
F --> Down-B
G --> Forward-B
H --> Up-B
I --> N-Air
J --> D-Air
K --> F-Air
L --> U-Air
M --> B-Air

When facing away from the opponent.

N --> Basic attack
O --> D-tilt
P --> F-tilt
Q --> U-tilt
R --> B-Neutral
S --> Down-B
T --> Forward-B
U --> Up-B
V --> N-Air
W --> D-Air
X --> F-Air
Y --> U-Air
Z --> B-Air

For numbers dash-dance briefly to imply you are about to communicate a number-

When facing opponent:

1 - N-Air
2 - D-Air
3 - F-Air
4 - U-Air
5 - B-Air
6 - Neutral-B
7 - Down-B
8 - Forward-B
9 - Up-B
0 - Basic Attack

We could further expand upon this code language by creating questions for certain other moves:

Taunt --> A/S/L?
Crouch --> Where are you from?
Double Jump --> What's your aim sn?

Just an idea.

This is a very rough draft of a possible code system that could be used in on-line brawl play.

Plz Discuss :D

I really don't think anyone who is fighting someone who's not on their list will try to communicate with you.... let alone learn the whole code, but it's a great try anyways

Lol, I don't see anyone taking the time to learn this. I'll just want to smash either way. No need to speak. ..but it would suck to fight someone you had a fun *** match with and never see them again. =\

I think the problem with this is the fact that anyone who doesn't know about this code (I'm guessing it'll be 99.9% of the online community) with think you're just a n00b that doesn't know how to play and will K.O. you as you're trying to communicate. Even people you do know the code will just take advantage of you and K.O. as you're communicating. I'm not trying to be harsh, I like the idea, but I'm just giving you a reality cheak.

You're overcomplicating things. Nobody is going to memorize a ******** alphabet of moves. Just spam the crouch button to say "Hey, log onto this website and give me your code." "This website" could be smashboards or some other site yet to be made. If they crouch spam back, it means they understand.

Oh yeah, because obviously by just crouching they'll automatically know who -you- are and will easily be able to log onto the site and give -you- their wii code.

Obviously, it would take a bit of time to memorize the code (like, all of 10-15minutes omgawd)

To those of you who reply saying people who don't know the code will just KO you as you try to communicate, yeah this is probably true. All you'd have to do to avoid getting KO'd this way would be to make a quick signal at the start of the match like lets say:

f-smash away from opponent

and then if they immediately respond with the same move then it's understood that both of you know said code.

I'd say use the fsmash thing, have a few stocks of battle. Then just have a paper with the code beside you. Give them your name or something if you're interested... but I still don't see it happening. =\

If the guy is in on the crouch spam site, he takes like a minute to figure out which matchup he's looking for. The original croucher says, for example, it was a DK vs Pit fight at approx. this time and describes something that happens or whatever.

Or instead of your alphabet, people could just learn Morse code, which already exists, and crouch the code.

Hm now I'm overcomplicating. Anyway, it'll just be like in a Minneapolis Airport bathroom, we'll have one signal for people "in the know" and then you can follow up on that later if you want to.

How about just go online to find your matches. and if you really need voice chat, mostly every person with a wii owns a ds. and if they have online for their wii then it is probable they have a wifi ds game. Like pokemon for instance, full wifi captiblity.

In fact, I think smash boards should incorperate some way of doing this. like having a pokemon or metroid friend code under the wii code.

That is just me.

Eeeh... sheesh

In all due respect, this seems like an impressively impractical idea. People aren't going to care enough to try to communicate when they're busy beating the living $*** out of each other. When people DO want to talk in game, they'll play their friends...

Communication isn't going to make much of a difference when you consider that, thanks to the random nature of wi-fi mode, you will most likely never see these individuals again in the virtual world or otherwise.

o_o;;;

I never really thought about this as a way of just talking to someone... but more so of having a great fight with someone, then losing them forever. That's if it's even possible to 1v1 with a random. I don't like how anonymous random is. :( You should be able to set an alert for x person after a fight... and if they set it for you, friend codes are added automatically.

Yeah, I wish it was set up like that. It would have made it that much sweeter.

Eh, your response was very intuitive. I was also considering other means of figuring out who you just fought (making a post on some special topic board perhaps on smashboards.com in the regional section?)

Really my general goal with this thread is to get people thinking of alternate means of communication so that by the time Brawl gets here we'll be able to get around this 'Anonymous Gaming' barrier.

Hahaha.

Anyways, this code would take longer to learn then you think. Its not very intuitive...

Yeah, well of course it's not super intuitive I made it up in like, a time span of four minutes.

the idea of this thread is for y'all to contribute your thoughts on how you would improve this code or how you would get around the anonymity barriers.

Can you invent a code language, well, that depends, what kind of OS are you going to be working with?! :chuckle:

I think that a better idea would be to simplify this into basic gestures, and drop the idea of communicating intelligent stings of letters/numbers. A simple Knee-->Taunt with CF would imply "Hey I ***** your ***" and a Fox's waveshine--->Upsmash would imply something kinder, like "Hey, I sexually abused your hindparts" Just a non-offensive thought.
