I'm meant to be doing some research for english language. before you ask why I'm posting here, let me finish

as our individual investigations, I decided on the development of language in online gaming communities, and I was advised to focus my study on Leet speak.

I would have posted in the forum games section, but that would have narrowed my search by quite a bit. so, can you guys do me a favour?

I need ten people who can speak in leet fluently. as most leet varies because of the amount of symbals per letter is alot, I need the ten of you to write these in leet:

the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog

God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

that should be enough. if you guys could do this for me, I thank you loads. if I could e-mail chocolate cake and other delicious goods, I would, but all I can offer is a big thanks to all who help me.

Isn't a pangram supposed to use all of the letter in the alphabet? I.E. The quick BROWN fox jumps over the lazy dog. I'll try and redirect some people here to help you out.

No biggie, they have loads of examples of pangrams on wikipedia if you're ever compelled. I'm going to put a link to your thread in my sig to send people to it.

EDIT: there, I'll try and get some people going your way.

Hey, just stumbled across this.

If you still need help, I'll be willing to type those up in 1337 for ya. It's been a while since I've been in middle school (ba-zing!) but I can still do it.

Look at the end of the sentence and the run on sentence.

Am I the only one who thinks this is the wrong approach? If you want valid information, why specifically ask for leet when nobody speaks it anymore? It's kind of a dead language.

suprisingly, I've seen people use leet quite alot. sure, it's dying, but it's still around. and as it's the biggest part of gaming language, it is probably a good thing to start here. (I would do it on a MMOG, but the thing is, I'm not part of one anymore, and I don't think it would please my parents if I bought one just to play it for one day)

LOL

I love how we on the Internet call it a dead language the way normal people call Latin a dead language. ****...that's pretty funny.

there is a such thing as simplified leet speak, the one you actually still see people use in fps and mmorpgs when they want to use leet but actually cant spend too much time talking.

thanks guys. this is really helping me. I should get a good grade from this. I would have done my investigation on something else, but video games are all I know, so, I chose this (plus, my teacher expected me to do this)

I hate to say this, but your English paper isn't going to be very scientific. You can't just tell people to talk some way to see how it happens in the real world. That's like telling an American to speak with their best French accent to get an idea of what real French accents sound like. It'll be too strong and not even what French accents sound like (look at the posts above/ 100|< @t 7e|-| p05T$ /\|30\/3 ). Nobody actually talks like that. And one person even used a computer program to translate your sample passage into leetspeak.

Whyt Diablos, if that matters to you and you aren't too far into your paper already, I suggest going into an actual game online and writing down some of the chat. I think you'll find that most people use 1337speak only at the ends of sentences, like this one!!111!one11eleventyone11!

I don't want to be mean or anything. I'm just sayin'.

I know, but as said before, I don't play an MMOG anymore, and my parents wouldn't be very pleased paying for a month when I only need a day.

As leet varies from person to person, I think it's safe to say that a camparison and analitical review of leet trends would help out. for example, while Tom uses numbers to replace letters, and other letters to replace real ones, the others who have submitted their leet use symbols and other lexical features which would not require any letters what so ever. I am aware that leet is swiftly dying/has died, but I have seen alot of people use it, especially on games like Halo on the PC and lineage 2. even city of heroes had people talking in leet most of the time, so i couldn't understand what the smeg they were saying.

bearing in mind, I wont just be studying various adaptations of leet, I'll also be studying the phonology of phrases and various semantic fields. for example, in txt speak, you'd just say rofl, but in leet, you'd most likley say "Roffle my Woffles" or something similar.

and plus, I'll be studying other lexical and semantic features of the online game world. roleplaying, reviewing excetera, I think I'll have enough bases to cover if leet falls through. and even if it's a dead language, it's just as interesting to me for an investigation as latin or cornish.

thanks for your concern though :)

Ahh, I see you are studying what leet means to different individuals. I thought you were going for a "whole language" approach. That makes more sense.

I don't have the time give you a sample, so I'll just tell you what I do when I have to speak leet. My method is to think of what letter I want to write--for example, a capital B--and look at the keyboard for shapes that make it. I think, hey, a B has a vertical bar and a three, so I type |3. Tada. Then I repeat for the next letter. Hope this helps.
