Can we use a 4 or 8gb sd card for the homebrew version?

No. Brawl is only compatible with non-HC SD cards, regardless of loading method.

The 2GB limit is only for the hackless version. You should be able to use most SD cards in the homebrew version. I, myself, use a 16GB SD card.
