do you think we could put together the most noobest friendly comprehesve yet simple guide to gettings smash setup online?
include controllers/controller adapters and catering for windows 7/vista/xpand PLUGINS
including where to download where to buy ETC.

and SERREVers/P2p
its just that if there was a cool guide i could print out lots of copies and distribute them at irl tourneys to increase interest.

i sort of wrote something about it, you can look for it in the european sticky index, should be a link there to a pj64k folder without the rom, and the p2p plugin as well as explanations on how to use p2p.

I remember I read some different guide when I started, don't remember where though. It wasn't on Smashboards. I remember him saying something like, "if you don't have a controller adapter, you can play on keyboard... yes, playing Smash on keyboard can be done", and I was like "OK I guess I'll play keyboard for now".

I made that guide on sitesled 10 million years ago. I had planned on updating it as time went on, but life got the best of me for a while.

I could re-do it. But I've been a bit out of the loop on some things, so I fear that I would miss some important information.

i think a good video of someone actually downloading extracting and playing step by step would be much more noob friendly than text. or maybe a combination of the two would be the best.

That wasn't about online. It was dch111's guide to all things smashbros.

im stumped as to where to begin with emulators.
Ill probably only mention project 64 0.13 and its variations?

Haha, glad to be back. I'm going to be playing online much more often now.

What I would REALLY like to do is develop a new netcode for Smash 64 altogether. Kaillera is ... rather crappy, as we all know. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to do this, but it needs to be done. I'm sure you guys have heard of GGPO for Street Fighter? If you haven't, look it up. Something like this needs to be done for Smash. I'm 100% willing to learn the skills to do something like this, but I fear it would take a team rather than one person to make any kind of substantial progress. And my programming background is much weaker than I'd like for it to be.

Mupen64+ has a proposed netplay architecture, which I too would like to help out with, but I am simply not familiar enough with low level network programming.

I would love so much to be able to switch to an open source solution, especially if it meant I could get rid of Windows.

[EDIT]: Judging by some of his posts on the emutalk forums, I believe Firo has done some research into alternate netplays, maybe he would have more info.

[EDIT2]: If you do start a project, I would be willing to help out. I can program in C, C++ (with a little brushing up), Java (prefer not to), and Python, I am willing to learn low level networking, but it will take me a bit to become comfortable with it.

I would pay you for your hard work if this turns out to work well. LOL that's the only way I can contribute.
There are a ton of ways to contribute to an open source project other than monetarily. Bug reporting is pretty much equal in value to code contributions, and it can be done with little or no technical knowledge. Evangelizing/advertising can also be very helpful, especially on young projects that aren't seeing much adoption (the more users, the stronger the project).

having a guide like this ready to hand out at genesis2/apex2012 would probably bring in more people to the 64 community, if it can be made in time for genesis, would be super-k0oL.
