There are three types of spamming in Sm4sh.

There is the one where the move barely works well in spamming. The only annoying thing about it is hearing the grunts or words of the character. (Example: "Autoreticle!" "Autoreticle!" "Autoreticle!" "ARK FIYA!" "ARK FIYA!" "ARK FIYA!" "BAKSLOSH!" "BACKSLOSH!" "BACKSLOSH!")

There is the one where it can be annoying if it's spammed, but with some smart thinking, and thorough tactics. You can completely avoid it. (mostly) (Example: Loid rocket, HOO HAA, and counters)

And finally, there is the one that makes players think they are a pro when spamming these ridiculous moves. When in reality they aren't. (Example: Yoshi's Up B, Smash attacks from Little Mac, and... dodging.

*gag*

Sorry. I gaged after saying the third type of spamming, because it is cheap and skilless in every way.

Seriously though. Some of the spamming in this game is flat out ridiculous in every way, and I propose that certain tournaments should have rules on spamming certain moves.

Discuss/Debate/Or just yell at me

There's nothing wrong with it. If they're doing the same thing over and over punish them. Fighting games are about reads. If someone wants to do the same thing over and over you should be happy because it's a free win!

There is not a single thing in this game that can't be easily countered if you know what your opponent is going to do before they do it. Strong players rarely engage in "simple" spam strategies for the sole reason that it's a losing tactic, though sometimes certain characters will rely on individual moves very heavily with heavy mix-up for spacing/timing. It's not always obvious to a casual observer what the difference is, but if you try to play a strong player and spam a move and find it doesn't work like you expected but you see good players get away with it, it's probably the latter case where there's a lot more movement and such under the hood than you see at first.

What's your primary experience with "spammers" based on? For Glory, or actual tournament experience?

If someone is repeating the same tactic over and over, it's on you as a player to adjust to and respond accordingly. An actual spammer will be pretty easy to punish. Even with the input delay online, you should still be able to anticipate their actions if they've repeated this over and over.

You main Villager. You can CATCH projectiles. You have multiple projectiles of your own!

But that aside, rules against spam are downright silly.

You can punish any spam easily if you know what you're doing. Just keep shielding Yoshi's Up B and they'll be forced to approach - also it's one of his best tools so I don't find any problem in using it as heavily as possible. Powershield Mac Smashes or stay out of the way; while they are good they aren't unpunishable. Punish spot dodges by running up, baiting it, then smashing or grabbing after waiting for the invincibility to wear off. Punish air dodges by baiting them early before attacking.

Nothing in this game is uncounterable.

Actually, spamming can count as an useful tactic in some situations. If you lose because your opponent spams a certain attack, you have to admit you weren't able to counter it and therefore lost.
(Yeah, it's true not every smash player is aware of this being a technique and just mash buttons, lmao.)

Indeed: Nothing in the game is uncounterable.

If my opponent falls for one move repeatedly why would I ever use a different move when I know that move will work? If it's skilless why can't you beat it?

It's on you to beat your opponent, it's not their job to "be nice" and not use moves you don't know how to counter.

Spammers never get very far into a tournament, because you have to be able to adapt to your opponent to have any chance of winning any tournament worth talking about.

Spamming is easy to do and easy to counter. If you keep getting punished by the same spam then maybe you should adapt and approach differently.

I'll take Yoshi's egg toss as an example since it sounds like you're having trouble with this move. Like any other move, ET has startup frames and a noticeable ending lag. In between ET you can weave in and approach with shielding into an OoS option or grab. If this yoshi is spamming it then you should have no problem closing the gap and get in their face to punish.

Personally, I've only really had trouble with dodge spammers, but that's mostly due to online lag and the fact that most of my mains don't cover both sides of themselves with their Dsmash. Anything in the game can be countered IMO. If someone is spamming a move, take advantage of that knowledge and punish them for it, like dodging the backslash and going in for a grab or smash. I don't like spammers since they never are fun to play against, especially Yoshis since they can throw eggs and egg roll you to no end, but learning those patterns and punishing correctly will help improve your game, at least that's what it did for me.

Complains about spam -> plays zoning characters
lol k

I also like how spam sounds better when you change the name. "Bread and butter" combos and "Zoning" makes it sound so... respectable.

I'm just poking fun. Spam is legit, but is always annoying. If you approach recklessly, you're screwed.

All right, how do you punish spammers in this game? First I went up against a Kirby player, and all they did was spam roll and dash attack, and since Sakurai is such a nice fellow he decided to make rolls really hard to punish in this game. Then he switched to Samus, and oh boy, those were some fun fights. It's really fun when someone just spams Charge Shot, missiles, and especially roll, since SAMUS'S ROLL IS COMPLETELY ****ING UNPUNISHABLE. IT MADE ME WANT TO BREAK MY ****ING CONTROLLER IN HALF AND I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE IF I HADN'T FOUND A STACK OF PAPER AND JUST RIPPED A BUNCH OF PIECES OF PAPER UP HOLY **** THAT WAS SO ****ING ANNOYING I HATE SAMUS WITH A FIERY PASSION AND ANYONE WHO PLAYS HER SHOULD DEPART FROM THIS PLANET AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. WHY IS HER ROLL SO ****ING IMPOSSIBLE TO PUNISH WHO THE **** THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA.

Anyway, how do I punish spammers?
