I had an argument with my friends today, I said "wow the lag with Sheik's needles" and they bombed me like "IT'S NOT LAG IT'S COOLDOWN LOL LAG IS WHEN YOU'RE INTERNET IS SLOW AND STUFF LOL" and called me dumb, when I'm almost positive lag is when you have a small time you can't do anything after certain moves, making them punishable sometimes.

Can someone just explain to me lag, cooldown, and hitstun so I know if I'm right or wrong?

Wow, your friends are jerks. I think what you were referring to ending lag: the amount of vulnerability after use of a move, or starting lag: how fast the move starts up and hits. Cooldown is probably another way of saying ending lag. Hitstun is how long you stay vulnerable after you are hit with an attack. I'm not 100% sure on this, but this is the way I've been seeing it used.

PSIboy is right, although the term lag can really be used for ending lag, start-up lag, or wi-fi lag. Theres also landing lag, which is how long your character is vulnerable after landing (also for landing with attacks), and display lag, which is the time it takes to get from your controller to tv. Hitstun is the period of time after being hit where you can't do anything (other than DI or teching). This may help you understand better.

Cooldown is one of the ways you say endlag if you've played too many MMOs or Dota (or derivatives thereof) etc. And unless your friends are ignorant of how to use context clues in the English language, they're either vocab ignorant (endlag is the generally used term, but lag is an accepted shortening unless you're playing online), or just trolling you.

In my experience, cooldown applies to the inability to use a specific move for some period of time, which doesn't apply to other actions. In other words, ending lag/endlag/lag is the correct term since it implies that you cannot do anything until the ending lag is over. Cooldown, on the other hand, implies that you can still act, you just can't use the same move until the cooldown is over.

Your friends are jerks.
