My brother has a really garbage playstyle where he spams Smash Attacks and never shields. This strategy ends up getting easily countered by shielding grabbing, and eventually punishing OoS. I've tried doing this against players online and I got wrecked, I held my shield up constantly expecting a laggy move, only to get grabbed and thrown into a combo or uncomfortable stage position. I also never expect a shield as a result of playing with my brother, so I end up going for Fair approaches that get punished. Can this be linked to me playing with my brother too often or do I just need to adapt a bit better and remember I'm fighting a different opponent?

Well, its not uncommon that someone who exclusively spars against one or two people will develop habits that rely on their opponent to have a certain playstyle. Mew2King, a famous Smasher, initially really struggled in the competitive scene because prior he had only fought against Level 9 CPUs and had developed bad habits as a result. Basically, you need to remember that the people you fight online are not your brother, and thus have their own style of play. Don't assume your opponent is going to do something until you see it done many times by them. If you can manage that, I think you'll see a major improvement to your winrate!

My winrate isn't that bad, I do adjust in fights but usually struggle to do so after a few rounds with my brother. With my mains, I'm probably at 70%-80%, although overall is 55% because I like to screw around with a bunch of characters I don't use.
