Maybe in some aspects, but I think it would be the same as anything.

If you want to get good at tennis, you don't play volleyball.

Yes and no. If you want to get good in Smash, you have to play Smash, but playing other games, especially fighters like Street Fighter can help improve your game play.

If you want to get good at Smash - you HAVE to play Smash.
However, this does not mean skills you gather from other games will not be useful here. If you play games that require a high reaction speed, that will transfer over partially to smash, since you're used to being able to react quickly to a new scenario. Other skills will have similar effects.

You can improve your reaction time, maybe.
Not many games are like smash, so good luck finding other games that can have that effect.

Also, the mindset in neutral in most other fighting games is the same as in Smash (reading other people's reactions, finding exploitable habits in their gameplay, adapting, etc.), so a majority of fighters can somewhat prepare you for Smash.

Playing traditional fighting games made me better at Smash Bros. Namely the defensive mechanics.

I believe other fighting games such as street fighter, blazblue and guilty gear can REALLY improve your gameplay on smash. This is because mechanics are pretty similar; you can block, grab and combo. Street fighter particularly improves your footsies game and guilty gear allows you to be able to put down combos better.

Games such as osu or cytus can enhance reaction levels, because those games are about clicking according to rhythm.

Hearthstone (in my opinion) may also help a tiny bit in smash in terms of decision making. Playing hearthstone I believe can bring up a mindset that allows you to stop making foolish plays repetitively.
