Can Marth compete at the noob level?

I played melee a lot and I knew how to play a decently good marth. My gameplay relied a lot on l canceling aerials into combos, and alot of wavedashing to play some mindgames . I used fairs into dairs, fmash, and dtilt edgegaurd for most of my kills.

Knowing this, when I pick up a copy of Brawl, will my skills (knowing how to use an advanced melee marth) transfer to the new marth at all? For example, if I choose marth, and another noob chooses another character, how well will I do? Does marth hold up as a good character in the noob stages of gameplay?

Btw, I havent seen any successful fair to dair combos. I heard that if you're playing someone with the least bit of skill they can get out of that sort of "ken combo".

So what are marth's new killing moves? Anyone with hands on experience with Brawl tell me: how do you kill people with marth, and how high do i have to get their percentages to do that?

Advanced Melee techs don't transfer over too well. Shffling is reduced to Shffing (no l-canceling), and is harder to do (higher shorthops, slower fastfalls). Wavedashing doesn't exist. Due to reduced hitstun, fair in to dair does not really work. Ken combos certainly not.

Fsmash and Dtilt are still great edgeguards, however. And you can still string two Fairs in a Shff (though it's harder to hit with both). Dair is significantly weaker, but Fair's tipper now sends much more Horizontal knockback, making it an awesome edgeguard on its own.

Marth's still a powerful character, and knowledge of his moveset will make him better than just any radom character played by a random noob. Just don't expect to pull melee stuff. The only characters that still feel like Melee characters are those that did not rely on L-canceling/wavedashing and were floaty, like Zelda.

Anytime you take a move out of something, it's going to be easier to do. Shuffling is way easier to do in this one. I agree that combos are pretty much out and it comes down to more spacing. I like it because it emphasizes 2 strong elements of game play. Combos allowed people to get railed to 100% like no other and also put in situations where they could be knocked off the ledge easily. Now you have two solid options. Take the person to 130+ and knock him off with a sweet move or do some serious risky edge guarding. I love that you can almost go off the stage completely and still recover. It makes for some really exciting matches when a lot of battling is done off stage. I totally dig the change.

The trick to hitting 2 fairs in a row is having the first fair hit really close to your body. Further on the tip, the more horizontal you go.

Dair isn't weakened, its just harder to hit. You can take more risks with it though because of great recovery.

I don't find forward smashes to be very useful for edge guarding though. They really made it easy to grab the ledge unlike in Melee where you can forward smash somebody as they're coming to it. I find getting down and dirty is the way to go with off the ledge fairs knocking them back. Most people's (if not all) back air attack is pretty strong. Marth's is less than most though.

All in all, you'll pick up Marth fast if you knew how to play him in Melee. First you'll L cancel everything you don't have to. I still L cancel from time to time, it doesn't really effect anything as long as you don't screw it up. The #1 thing I think you will dislike as a Marth main is the lack of dash dancing. I'm really working on getting dash dancing to work in Brawl and I'm really close to getting away and a quick turn around. Oh yeah, forward b works! and it works good! Use it!

In Melee you would push forward wait a moment then back and so on and so forth... In this one you can only fox trot forward or do a really really fast (covers like no distance) dash dance. The trick is to go forward then forward/back really fast.

Oh yeah. I can't find a single use for a throw at all so I've been grabbing them and just punching them to get the most I can out of %

I have a feeling Marth could be #1 in this game. I'll let other people make that decision tho :p He's definitely versatile which I like
