Can I fight my friend online cross-platform?

My friend wants to fight me, but his wii doesn't work, so he has to use a wiiu for project m. If I'm playing on a wii, can I still fight him online?

Given that Brawl is loaded in the Wii-u's "Wii" mode, there shouldn't be any problems.
