Salsa
Smash Rookie
Hello guys!
Let me introduce myself, my name is Ivan, a.k.a. Bamm or Salsa. I'm from San Diego, California, but I've been living in Cancun, Mexico for the last 17 years... and I really love Cancun! There's a great environment (parties, easygoing people, beaches, etc.) that you may already know or have heard of... but some might wonder if there's any Smash competitive scene here!
I've been a Smashboards lurker for a long time, since I played Melee with my friends and wanted to get better.. I followed up Brawl's Launch-up and saw how the community grew and how the game turned out to be competitive (even after all the Melee-Brawl hate).. watching videos, learning about the game, learning to play "competitively" and surpassing casual friends, I met few people who also liked the game and wanted to get better but it was hard to accomplish some kind of community because of skeptical people and not enough support. I'm talking about 2008-2009 when the game still had lots of popularity.
I continued to lurk the forums and play online, but in the end, local smashfests or tournaments here in Cancun were a rare sight (and they still are), only big anime conventions (which are also rare) held some tournaments, and organization SUCKED big time. (No competitive rules, boringggg). In Mexico, the competitive smash scene isn't that big, specially here in Cancun (Good smashers live mainly at center-north of Mexico), but I decided to change that!
Starting this year, I developed a project to build a competitive Smash Scene at Southeastern Mexico, (with the help of a Texan friend called "Seiya" who used to play at Houston, TX.) and we are talking that I've go a deal with a Videogames & Entertainment Locale (Magic, Yu-Gi-oh, Warhammer) to held Smash Bros Brawl. tournaments each month and smashfests once a week (Fridays c
.
So far, answer from the small community has been positive. Old Smashers have come back to the game, new people are showing interest to the competitive side of the game and we are having lots of fun teaching advanced mechanics, (Mostly Brawl, not so much Melee). The project is fairly young, but I wanted to share this story with everyone here to receive critics and advice, and to kind of make a journal of how the little community here in Cancun grows. Who knows, maybe when taking a vacation in Cancun, someone could have nice matches here lol.
Here are some pics of the posters so far and of the first "big" tournament. We had 24 attendees. I think it's a nice start, and I want to improve attendance in future events. I would really appreciate you guys sharing your thoughts and advice! I will periodically update this thread to see how much this project advances.
