You just play an intense game with it. And by intense, I mean a game that is going to force you to use a majority of the buttons on your controller frequently.

Alternatively, play a really, really unfairly frustrating game. And instead of just sighing and turning off your console when you've had enough, let your rage consume you and snap your controller in half with your own two hands.

If you're trying to break it in for a particular game like Smash, just play that very same game. Do everything that you'll normally do and it'll eventually break in. There's no real special shortcuts for it, it's just going to take time.

lol, i need a new PS3 controller because my left analog stick gets stuck in the upward possition unless manually pulled back downward, it really messes me up it some games...
Yeah that's a pretty big issue between winning and losing a game if it gets stuck like that lol

its not usually a win/loss struggle with it, its just VERY frustrating...
i just finished sonic generations and it kept sticking, making me fall off platforms and suck, platforming and CoD are the biggest struggles with it...
