Brawl = ugly UI

The two previous Smash's had rather clean UI's (User Interface). There was a small semi transparent symbol for each character (Mario = mushroom, Link = Triforce), and the percentages for each character. But now there are not only the symbols, but a picture of each character's face down at the bottom of the screen at all times.

This to me seems to be a complete waste of processing power, not to mention that it makes the screen appear cluttered. I understand that for people new to Smash, it will help them easily identify where there percentage is located, but was it really such a problem for everyone to locate their percentage that they had to add the characters faces at the bottom of the screen?

I, for one, hope that there will be an option to put the UI at a minimal setting, where it will only show the symbol for each character, as well as the percentage. Heck, they could even put an option for a bare bones UI, with only percentages and no symbols.

If you agree with me, and cringe at the cluttered UI Brawl currently has, please respond to this post. Maybe the right person will read this and take the 1 week worth of scripting it would take to add an option of altering the UI for each person.

It's not awful. I do admit it's kinda tacky; but it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.

They become transparent when you walk behind them.

I agree that the icons are huge this time around, but despite the fact that they're huge they are pretty nice looking.

And plus they go transperant when you get behind them.

I originally hated the in-game UI. Having them turn transparent seems to make it a lot more tolerable, but begs the question, why aren't they just semi-transparent all the time?

I like the addition of the names on the bottom, but the pictures just seem plain ridiculous. I can only imagine they added those to show profile avatars in online matches. Which will only be cool if there's an option to create your own anyway.

I think the name, picture, and symbols are all redundant. They should tone that down a bit.

I completely forgot about the names at the bottom this time around. So we have a symbol, a picture, and a name...

Do we really not know which character we are controlling so bad that we need all of these things reminding us of who we are?

Also, this is a good point you bring up about custom avatars in online matches. If you can customize your avatars at the bottom of the screen, then there is a reason for the cluttered UI. If not, it should be taken away.

You need to worry when this game is gonna get released instead of the user interface.
Negative. The game's going to be released when the game is ready. I worry about the game being done properly, not on time.

I personally take full responsibility for the game being delayed to '08, by the way. The game was going to be released the Monday BEFORE FINALS. Does Sakurai WANT me to fail my finals? SO, I prayed to an assortment of religious saviors and deities and lo and behold, the game was pushed back to after I graduate.

Hehe I've graduated college a few years ago so I'm not in the same boat. Hope Spring of 08 sounds good to. That's when it'll hit shelves.

Well, it's not going to bother me too much. They do go semi-transparent when something's behind them so I don't think it really matters. Even if i didn't like it, I'd be too busy enjoying the game.

Most of them seem kind of unnecessary to me.
After all, Sakurai wants to make this game applicable to anyone, so there should be a buttload of options for gameplay.

So we have name, picture and gamelogo.

It does seem redundant. But they do go transparent when walked (or trown) trough, plus you will get used to it after a while, somebody just said they didn't see the names under the pictures.

After a while, you might not even see them, or we might be given the option to turn them of.

They've grown on me so I don't hate them as much. It was pretty ugly at first though.

This is a new game therefore you'll see new things...example: The UI

To me it's pretty cool but I was hoping for beat up faces(like the higher the percentage...the more your characters face will be beat up looking) but that's just me

I think I'm the odd one out. I've actually liked the new UI ever since I saw them when the new Dojo first went back online. And anyway I'm sure you guys will grow on them in the next 6+ years of playing Brawl.

I think you mean the HUD is ugly. The UI is far cleaner than the past two titles.

at first, i thought you meant the User Interface of the game...i've realized now that you mean the DISPLAY SCREEN during battle.

I disagree with your opinion over the "UI". I think it looks very clean, very minimalistic, and very reminiscent of Kirby's AirRide for the GCN (which, 'duh', since it was made by the same person: Sakurai).

As for the battle DisplayScreen, I agree. It does make it look cluttered, but it'd definitely NOT UGLY.

BUT, the portraits become transparent as a character overlaps it. So it's more forgiving than it's made out to be.

Also, the new icons and damage meters are shrunk to fill in the same space that the meters used in Melee. Melee had bigger numbers and icons. It uses the same space, but it looks more cluttered cuz they squeezed so much detail into the same square of space in Brawl.

Why does your signature say battle makeup?

Rouge = Makeup.

Just wanted to let you know.
Maybe he means the color. That would be HILARIOUS though if he meant Rogue. I doubt it though. No one is that stupid. But yeah I really don't like the big picture of the character render there. It is completely unnecessary.

Wow if this is all you're worried about of the game, you are so lucky!

That really is a stupid thing to be upset about

You've also got to consider that the only type of gameplay we've seen is TIMED match.

It'll probly be different for a STOCK match, don't you think?

To be honnest, I don't think the HUD looks that ugly, and it fits well with how the UI looks now. Do know that before Smash was mostly dark and a bit lonely. With the new style for the UI, which is brighter, cleaner and stylized, the HUD also reflects this by adding something fancy, like a picture and the name.

Does it get in the way with gaming? Maybe, but does it look ugly? I think not.

I think its fine. In Melee they got in the way a lot like in Dream Land and other large levels. In Brawl they give it a feel of newness in my opinion. Plus they become transparent when a character is behind them so you really don't need to pout about it. Also user interface is not the right term to use for the icons. Interface refers to the way the menus are set up, character selection is, etc.

Honestly I think it will make it easier in multiplayer matches to recognize which belongs to you. I used to have that issue, although that was long ago.

I think the reason they have pictures now is because they have several transformation characters.

This to me seems to be a complete waste of processing power, not to mention that it makes the screen appear cluttered.
Waste of processing power? They just changed the image from an icon to an icon with a picture of the character. The processing power involved is practically the same. It might use up to a megabyte of extra space, but that's about 0.015% of the total space on the disk. I just wanted to make it clear that performance decrease isn't an issue.

Also, I like the new icons. Most people seem not to, but I think they're nice.

And the thread title is misleading. You say the UI, but in actuality you're talking about the "HUD". The UI is the menu screens, the layouts, colors, effects, etc. Earlier UI screen shots didn't look too good, but I think it's really been polished. Watching the hands-on videos really shows how clean and snappy the UI is.
