SO nintendo should specifically mention a Fan-site before it's official one? That makes no sense and the rest of your arguement is assuming that people (1) Could'nt find out about the competative community any other way and (2) That they're interested in it.
Neither point garuntees Nintendo any extra money, as the game will more than like sell out from Word-of-Mouth and advertising regardless. While Smashboards is a great resource, it is not a determining factor on Nintendo's paydays. People who buy the game will tell their friends regardless, those friends will buy this game IF they have a Wii (or in rare instances, buy a Wii just for this game). It doesn't affect the game either way, so there is no unavoidable reason that Nintendo should specifically mention a fansite before any official Nintendo related site. It likely won't happen
Mentioning an unofficial site would certainly be unorothodox, and I never said it was likely. My argument certainly does not rely on the fact that people cannot find out about the competative community any other way or that everyone is interested in it. You are too glued to absolutes. What I am arguing is that
MORE people would learn about the competitive community this way. And many people, certainly not "all", but many people would be interested. And certainly the game will sell out immediately, as many good games do, but the effects of making mention of Smashboards would come into effect later, not as soon as they are on the shelves. Sure this doesn't "guarantee" Nintendo will make more money, but it is certainly likely. I know a good number of people who bought Melee, and didn't play it with friends or get into it, and even sold it. (I of course changed their minds later) These guys were telling nobody of Melee. However, knowledge of the competitive community and what is possible will definitely make people want to get better, and enjoy playing more. (Just as a disclaimer, I didn't say "everybody" just now.)
It would be great if Nintendo endorsed this site though...
