Personally, I never really got in to competitive play for SSBM. I always tried to be better than my friends and I would almost always beat them when we played together. Being very young throughout the duration of SSBM, I never really knew about professional play or tournaments. I somewhat just really got into competitive play for video gaming recently and gave Super Smash Bros Melee another chance, just to try to "sharpen my skills" for SSBB. I am an above average player... being able to do some ATs, pull off combos, and I try to mimic videos of professional smashers.

Getting to my point... is mastering SSBM going to be worth it if I plan on becoming a competitive player in SSBB, and do you think that SSBB will be so much different from SSBM that I can start on a clean slate to begin my smashing career?

I know that having a lot of experience with the game will most definitely carry into Brawl (familiarity with the control, fast reflexes, situational actions), but I don't believe that it will have an immediate impact on your skills in Brawl and that much adjusting will take place in order for you to stay up to par with your expected skill level.

.... yes?

I'll let Gimpy get the final word on this, but I'd say (as an above-average player, myself) just work on a lot of situational stuff and don't hone the Melee technical skills like wavedashing and L-cancelling. Certain advanced techniques will be executed differently in Brawl, but the Smash gameplay should be the same.

Use the Search. ******.

PS: You're probably not above average.
Yes, I did use the search, but I guess I didn't put in the right word combination to find a similar thread. Thanks for your encouragement though.

Also, if I am able to beat my friends almost all of the time, and win a tournament at my local gamestop I consider myself to be above average. Yes, I know, a tournament at a local gamestop is nothing short of pathetic, but beating a crowd of 30 people says at least that I don't suck, and I am not just an average player.

P.S. what do I type in search to find a relevant thread?

your mom.
uhm, personally, i tihnk that playing ssbm will improve your skill in ssbb TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. Remember that this is a brawl is a completely new game (as gimpy always says) and from what i've read, most ATs will not be in brawl.. so its kinda pointless to use them if your trying to get better for brawl. but instead of training on melee for brawl.. why dont you wait for feb.10 and then train on brawl for brawl... it just seems to make more sense to me :p but yeah, working on little things like your reaction time and knowing what moves to pull at the right time will prolly help you in brawl.

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=121870 That's a helpful thread. It might help you find what you want. I think if people are going to bash you about writing an old topic, they should at least consider pointing you in the right direction.

Take Youko's advice. Positioning and overall strategy seem to be more important now than simply being faster or quicker with your fingers.

Compare these two videos of Brawl to those of random people playing. I think that skill will transfer over, and will probably make the learning curve much less steep. Some ATs have changed, of course, but clearly the games have a fair amount in common.

The professional lineup will probably change somewhat (I mean, it changes from time to time anyway), but it's not like melee skill will be irrelevant to brawl.

By the way, I'm not sure why everyone is telling you to use the search button. I don't recall seeing threads like this on a regular basis, and the search may not be good enough to pick up one or two threads. For that matter, threads prior to E for All don't have any relevance here.

everyone starts back on square one as far as techniques go, but not technical ability (because SPACING is technical ability)

work on spacing and not being predictable, thats really all that will help. no, playing as luigi and jigglypuff will not help you becasue the game is "floatier"

just try to play intelligently, thats the best we got for now

Skill probably wont transfer over.
Um, Yes, It will.

It's not like getting brawl will render you unable to have "skill". Actually, I don't even know your definition of skill.

Learning to time, spike, and short hop perfectly will defiantly help in brawl, which pretty much are the basics. Of course it'll take maybe 10 minutes to get used to the characters, then it'll all come back.

Skill will definately transfer over. You have to remember that everyone else is playing this game for the first time too (excluding E 4 Allers) so Pro's will still be better then the average player even if they both were playing Brawl for the first time. Practicing advanced techniques will obviously not help you as they are now all either preformed differently or completely gone. Brawl is a very new game with completely reworked physics, but nonetheless, it is still the Smash Bros game we all know and love and playing the game will help you improve.

I watched the two videos. There is a clear difference, but then again they had admitted to playing Brawl multiple times so they are used to it. The level of play was a little more intense, but it didn't look anywhere near the level of play that this game is capable of reaching. All in all, it looks like the transition makes a big difference.
