Blogs...
Exactly what are they?
Why are they so great? Why are they so exciting? Who knows?
I think I know.
Blogs are there so people can rant in whatever way they feel in the form of text rather than speech. It can also be used like a journal or similarly just to keep track of your thoughts (impossible for me sadly, by the time I finish one blog odds are I'll have forgotten at least four or five thoughts. =(
But what are blogs really? I wouldn't be able to call myself curious if I didn't ask that.
Blogs are the embodiment of a persons thoughts in data form. Typed straight into the internets. Some people probably think blogging is useless, but really it's more like a journal that you WANT others to read and reflect on in their own life. In essence, you are journaling the future thoughts of the people who read your blog.
Blogs aren't just for thought, however. They can be used in many creative ways, such as giving someone a public shoutout.
The thing is many people enjoy the publicity of a blog as opposed to a journal because not only does it let others reflect on your own thoughts, YOU can reflect on the thoughts they share. This creates an infinitely repeating "chain of thought" between two or more people that will not break so long as one person is still sharing their thoughts with someone else.
Kinda makes you think about where conversations can go and why they inevitably will a little more, huh?
But a blog is not just a form of emotional expression, it is an outlet for any kind of idea.
If you want a theory critiqued by your friends you can blog about it and expect serious answers that will make them think. Then as you get closer to the truth your searching for your friends will also come closer to that truth.
If you want a piece of writing evaluated or just read like a book, put it in a blog. Letting others comment on your work will not only improve you as a writer it will force others to think more deeply about how you can improve and, more importantly, what you really meant. It means people have a little extra help, are given a sort of push, to read between the lines.
If you want to write about your inspiration for an art piece you posted you can exchange sources of inspiration with others and find even more ideas for your work. In addition this helps others to see your art's true meaning just like with the writing example.
The list goes on and on and on. Really a blog is whatever you want it to be.
A philosophical statement to the world
A public journal
A critique corner
A place to just keep track of and expand your ideas
YOU decide what to do with it. So to answer the question asked at the start of this discussion, no one person defines or can define a blog. So the final verdict really is no one knows. Not even myself. I only claimed to know because I know that no one CAN know.
They are great because the emotion others put into them is reflected through the blog making them exciting to read.
They are exciting because it's a real person writing and you are intrigued by the nature of their thoughts. I can say that with conviction because if you weren't curious you wouldn't have read this far.
Finally I would like to say that this blog is, at some point down the line, a product of any thought or idea that has been shared by my friends both in real life and on the internet. Thank you for letting me express myself in this way and I hope to inspire your future thoughts... And maybe brainwash a few minds along the way. =P
