Jesus christ, whats the point of adding a "guard" button if it never works? -.-
I just played a team battle game online and was unable to block 90% of the time, although my shield was up i just kept getting hit as if i had no shield

i highly doubt it was lag, my shield was up and i could clearly see it was up before i even took the attack... =/

Maybe your shield ran out of strength? But that would usually result in dizziness... Are you letting go of the shield button at all? You may be releasing it too early.

Well,if your character's body extends outside the shield, they are vulnerable to attack in that area. This is more likely to happen if your shield is small.
Is that maybe the problem?

If you're attempting to do a roll or a dodge, there's a few split seconds of vulnerability. If you're coming under constant attacking while shielding or you just have bad timing, it's very likely you'll get hit and it'll visually seem like attacks are going through your shield.

I felt the same way you did for a little while until I realized that dodging does more harm than good, usually. Try paying attention to when you're shielding and if you're trying to dodge or not. You may not think so now, but you'll find yourself trying to do it a lot if you pay attention.

As has been said, if your character "clips" through your shield, then they're vulnerable in those areas. Also, remember that grabs still work against shielding players, so you're not 100% safe.

The clipping is why everyone loves Robin's neutral special =/ The damage it does to the shield reduces it enough to clip most characters unless you're actually closer to him/her which unless you're playing against a CPU leaves you wide open for a grab. Although I also have that problem with other attacks and it's online's lag.. It's the small lag hiccups which are the worst >_< (I hate pressing dodge to escape a grab and my character just shields in place going full tard mode, irritates me to insanity.) My advice is to release the shield a little later than you would in offline mode.
