No real way to say. I would assume quite a bit, but I don't know the block sizes of other games really.

And this is the one thing Nintendo's still slow on... it'd be easier to estimate things if they were done in regular kilo/mega/gigabyte units instead of arbitrary blocks.

They will probably reveal how many blocks the game needs closer to the release, not to mention we will know the exact number when people start downloading the game in Japan. That said, I don't think 4GB will be enough for the game. I would buy at least a 8GB SD card, just to be safe. Then again, looking at Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, I would estimate the size of the game to be around 3 or so GB, but it is actually only 1,8GB~ (14,275 blocks).

Most kids don't understand kilo/mega/gigabytes and the 3DS is full of them :p Blocks are simpler and easier to understand.

Due to localization, there's a fair chance the size will differ slightly between the US and JP versions, especially if they include things like language settings (if the Japanese version lacks such settings) or region-specific content (I'm looking at YOU, JP Brawl version of Monsho no Nazo).

Why not both, or a system setting? Adults don't know how to convert blocks to gigabytes.

It is not that hard, just multiply the number of blocks per 0,128 and you will get the size in bytes. Each block corresponds to 128 kilobytes, by the way.

Now if only Nintendo could have told me that.

Still easier to do MB/GB, though. Then again, if my mom can't figure that out, I'm not sure how safe it would be for me to say 10-year-olds can in general, though I know some who can.

True, there should be a "blocks to bytes" converter app in the 3DS. Or they should just list the size in bytes in each game's pages.

My 3DS is using an 8 GB SD card with 19,177 spare blocks (2.5 GB) left. I'll be fine when I get the game digitally. If not, I can delete some demos & videos. If that fails, SD cards are pretty cheap to me so I can upgrade.

I honestly don't know, I'm going to assume it won't be that big (probably 5,000 blocks), but who knows, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is 17,000 blocks (digitally) and it seemed like a normal 3DS game that wouldn't take up so much space.

I hope it's not 17,000 blocks if it is I have all of deleting to do and there's games that I wanna leave but I will if it means I get smash

I think the description of the game found in the 3DS eShop states that it has a huge file size, I could be wrong, though. xD

If we see more limits similar to 2 songs per stage for 3DS, we shouldn't have to worry about the game being too large.

Or if you want simplified math: 7gb (Brawl total) minus 4gb (Subspace Emissary) minus 1gb (300 songs) equals 2 gigabytes.

I got DKC Retruns 3d for my yearly club nintendo reward and that game is 17,665 blocks so just a heads up some games are really really big. I have nearly 8k free blocks but gonna have to eventually buy a bigger SD card. Not so much for smash3ds but for other VC games I want to buy. and I dont have many.

And you are ignoring the higher amount of characters, possibly stages, assist trophies, etc etc. I really doubt the game is less than 3 GBs.

1GB equals to around 8,000 blocks, I think. I am betting the game will be around 25,000 blocks or so (this is just a guess, mind you).

It WAS simplified. If we get REALLY nitty-gritty here...
  • 3DS assets use less space than Brawl (models, textures, sounds?, etc.)
  • 2 songs per stage limit means a lot less music. Could likely be to save space.
  • Brawl kept a separate model for every single recolor: Bandai Namco (and hopefully Sakurai now) knows better
  • Loading characters mid-game forced two files for each character and recolor (May return due to Events/Multi-Man, may not due to transformation removal)
  • Boss stages use duplicate files: Classic, Adventure, Multiplayer, Boss Rush. May not be an issue, save for Master Hand.
It could easily be argued either way. Ignoring Subspace Emissary, Smash 3DS does look to equal Brawl's amount of content. If anyone wants to see real numbers, I could tally up numbers from the Brawl rip and come up with good estimates.

Are you serious? There is no way Smash 3DS "equals Brawl's amount of content". lol

This is ignoring Subspace Emissary, mind you. Otherwise, duh, Brawl has much more. This is how I see it:

Smash3DS has more than Brawl in every in-game category: characters, items, stages, but not music. So as far as the battles themselves go, the 3DS has more.
(Unconfirmed) Game features like Event Matches, Multi-Man, Stage Builder, Replays, have a good chance of returning. And there are plenty of new game features: Smash Run, Customization, Wii U sync features, Amiibos, and they're actually used in core gameplay.
Sakurai even flat-out compared 3DS trophies outnumbering Brawl's trophies. There's only a few categories where Brawl still beats out the 3DS, and the game's not even out yet.
