In the last couple of months some big things have been going on in smashboards. I feel these projects could use a little more awareness as well as some involvement from the community. I think it is important for the smash community to work together to further the competitive experience.
Database
The first big thing going on in the melee world is the Smash Database. The smash community is trying to compile a database of all old and new tournaments. From the data so far they have created an Elo rating system for the melee community. The uses for such a database are endless. I know the brawl community has collected an extensive amount of information and put it to good use as well. I feel that a joint effort by both communities to organize, collect, and utilize data will allow us to better understand our community and smash.

At the very least this thread needs to be copied into the smash information forum as well as possibly the general discussion of both Melee and Brawl.
Reddit
The other thing the melee community has done is started to use Reddit in order to further increase awareness in competitive smash bros. As some of you are aware there is quite an extensive Starcraft community on reddit. Reddit reaches a lot of different people. I believe Smash also received its own sub-reddit. Growth and interest so far has been slow but I think with more support we could find ourselves with another avenue to advertise our events and show off our awesome matches.

Really the goal of all this is to simply help increase tournament size. Any competitive community wants growth.

Mentoring
The next big thing going on is the mentoring program. Now this isn’t specific to melee or brawl but I feel that it certainly needs more exposure. This is a great way to get people interested in competitive gaming. Now people new to the community can “Level up” quickly under the guidance of a mentor. When you are on the outside looking in competitive smash just looks so intimidating. The mentoring program is a great way to make us seem less threatening to the outside as well as introduce new faces and get them up to speed competitively. This will allow community growth and improve the competitiveness as well.

TO Handbook
The final big thing going on is the TO handbook. This also isn’t specific to either community, but so far most of the interest in the project seems to the Melee community. We need TOs for every community to work together and come up with a solid handbook that will allow old and new TOs to run amazing tournaments. Tournaments are the events in which we compete. If we want to see Smash grow and become a recognized e-sport TOs need to need to step it up. If we can get that done than the work the ambassadors are doing will simply start to fall in place. The TO is a great place to start with community improvement, but I feel they need help in order to get what they need done. There is a lot of information we need to collect, organize, and analyze that will allow TOs to run better and more fun events.

If you find other projects that the Smash community needs to recognize and participate in feel free to share it here.
