Better to use personal name for online, or a nickname?

Hey all,

Wanted to hear your opinions on this. I have some smash 4 records that I've been amassing under my personal name, which I created for my custom controller setup. However, It's my real name and therefore not very memorable (but much better for local play with friends), so I was considering creating a new name using my online nickname GameBird (or as close as I can get to it) to play in online matches. It would make it easier to find good matchups later and might help me build a bit of a reputation for my name (if I am to get gud lol).

The problem is of course that it would mean starting from 0 in terms of battle records. It's not the end of the world, but I'm wondering what your opinions are on this: how important are the records to you? what would you guys do in my spot?

Online records aren't really important to me, I say just go by whichever you feel most comfortable with online. GameBird would be easier to remember, but that's about it for 'pro's' that I can think of, so if you want to be remembered a bit easier online, then yeah I'd go with GameBird.

I'd say go for the nickname. Records aren't something you should clinge to, that's why I like the idea of records for the last 10, 50, 100 matches, though FG has it's own problems for record keeping. Anyway, consider records just a measure of evaluating your success, but take it with a grain of salt. (no pun intended).

Also: nicknames are cooler. They give you a touch of mystery.

Haha yeah that was pretty much what I was thinking too. If I ever do want to get into competitive battling I want to make a name for myself haha

I use a nickname for consistency and security reasons. All my gaming accounts have the same nickname (except for Sony, since they won't let me change my name from when I first created my account), which I use for the rare times I play online to make sure people know I'm the same person. Security since I'd like to restrict how much of my real name is floating on the internet as much as possible. You never know what may come back to haunt you when taken out of context (happened a lot to people once businesses started using Facebook for different things, for example), and I'd like to make sure I'm the one in control of what I share with others.

So, if you see the name displayed on my left in any online games than almost always it will be me.

I say use what you want. I first started with "JWest" since that was my nickname in college. Since then I've also used "blue" (I now use that as my 2v2 name) and most recently I've been using "NSFW" as my 1v1 name.

I'd say go for the nickname. Records mean very little in the grand scheme of things, as only you can see them, and they only pertain to that particular mode of play.

And anyway, GameBird is a cool name. You should be proud to be recognised as that.

Real names may be hard to remember (unless yours is unique) so nickname/gamer tag would be the way to go I recommend.

I use my full name, address, and list of fears and weaknesses so they can come salt my popcorn in person when they lose.

I've said this before in other threads, but IGNORE YOUR W/L RATIO. clinging to it will just make you a worse player, you'll want to stomp on new players rather than lose and actually learn something from a pro. FG w/l ratio means nothing to anybody, if it's really high it just means you leave matches when you're losing, which means you're not a very good player.

First of all, **** that win/loss record because they have absolutely no meaning to me or to anyone.

Second of all, GameBird is such a badass nickname so I would just stick to that. I've always went by my nickname Tino the whole time since I started playing the game online and I never changed it.
