Best way to hold the controller?

So I generally play Smash 4 wherein I'm able to configure the controls and switch my L to grab, which makes holding the controller feel much more natural than when playing with Z as my grab. So, I have two questions:

1. I know in the vanilla game itself there's no way to reconfigure controls, but is there ANY possible way to do it with hacking or modding or something? I'm pretty desperate to set L as my grab.
2. If there's absolutely no way to get L as my grab, what are some tips or methods for holding the gamecube controller in a comfortable, natural position while still being able to press Z? Will I just have to take the time to adapt to it? Should I hold it as I normally would but move my right index finger from R to Z precisely?

Thanks for reading!

I think you can open up the controller with a triwing and do it but I don't have any expertise there. I can only think of adapting to it.

Yeah, modding a controller might be a way to go about it, but like AirFair, I have no clue what goes on in there. The way I hold a controller is with my right thumb joint resting on A, thumb pad on Y, and I just rock my finger right when I need X and move my thumb down to hit B or farther down for the C-Stick. I have my right index on Z, right middle on R, and left index on R. My left thumb just rests on the joystick and switches to the D-Pad whenever it needs to. I'm not sure if that's standard, but it's what I use for every GC game.

I would honestly just switch to Z if I were you; it would be more difficult to JC grab with an analog button with a digital at the bottom because that's a lot more distance your finger would have to go in the few frames of jumpsquat.

considering you dont like using z, why not try and learn shield+a? if you put enough practise in you could time it pretty well and it would be like using L but you have to press A at the same time and this requires no modding or anything. hope this helps!

The only problem with that is it would be impossible for her to JC grab if she tries to shieldgrab all the time, which is why I recommended switching to Z.

not "impossible" i don't think but i didnt think of that, yeh i personally use Z so probably getting used to that would be the best thing for you

Never mind, you're right. I thought the game only looked for if A was pressed while the shield was up, but it just looks for any time A and R/L are both pushed at the same time and registers it as a grab (basically serving the same purpose as the Z button). Still, it would be easier to just press two buttons instead of having to press three within a very small frame window.

I've got a spare controller to experiment on so I may end up trying to mod the controller to get the controls I want. Do tournaments have any rule against using a modified controller if that's the only change to it? Is it something I'd need to discuss with the TO?

I'm personally a fan of the N64 grip method, even for Melee. That's where you put your left hand on the left handle, your right hand on the right handle, and your middle hand in the middle.

I play with my middle finger and pointer finger in front and behind the L trigger. I dont touch it. Best way to adapt is just figuring out how you think the controller should fit in your hand

In theory, claw grip is ideal because you can control jump and C-stick independently of each other (e.g. instant uairs). But I find it unnatural and painful over extended periods of time, but that may just be because my hands not used to it. Just hold it however it feels most comfortable for you.

Does anyone in this thread know of a good guide to controller modding? I've ordered a triwing and plan to just modify the controller to my custom inputs.
