Hobbes’s picture of man is that we are needy and vulnerable. We are easily led astray in our attempts to know the world around us. Our capacity to reason is as fragile as our capacity to know; it relies upon language and is prone to error and undue influence. When we act, we may do so selfishly or impulsively or in ignorance, on the basis of faulty reasoning or bad theology or others’ emotive speech.

Discuss.

Wow... talk about a hope killer. Whatever happened to being optimistic?

You don't need language to reason or to know about something, and when used properly it can help a great deal.

I mean there are a lot of bad things about us, but he seems to not recognize the good things.

Greenstreet, don't make yourself sound smart by copying and pasting an old philosopher's writing, then simply saying 'discuss'.

If you actually wanted to discuss about it, you'd say something-- but you didn't.

He has a homework, methinks.

I agree that humans do not carry perfect logic, and they don't need to carry perfect logic, but seeking truth and being "led astray" from time to time is better than remaining ignorant, especially in a Democratic society.

But what does Calvin think?

I just want to quote that entire thing and say "No ****". Sometimes philosophy irritates me to no end. You have a person or a group of people that come up with the "ways of the world" and think they're profound, when sometimes common sense lets you know the same thing.

Some philosophy I can get into, but I think I've met one too many arrogant philosophy students in my time.

Mathematics aims to take complicated concepts and demonstrate them in as simple a manner as possible. Philosophy aims to do the exact opposite.
