I just started melee today at a friend's house since he's my only friend who has a copy. I have played Project M for a bit before (about 20 hours). Not all characters are unlocked but I'm pretty sure my main is going to be Marth. I was wondering if any of you have any tips for me and how melee differentiates with Project M.

Whoa whoa whoa, you can't be pretty sure.

I've gone through many characters swiftly and vaguely learned some matchups, but you gotta test.
At first I never thought I would even be able to wavedash with Fox and now I'm consistently pulling off waveshine trains ending in some jank combo, key word, consistently. It's all about consistency, if you're gonna pick a character, you can't just say "oh i might be able to possibly win with this character.", you have to make sure that you're going to show your skill. Sure you may not win at first, but imo it's all about showing what you've got.
Melee has quite a bit of viable characters, choose wisely.
