Cherries. Yes, the cherries from super mario 3d world will make a reappearance in project M. It will give your character a copy of itself, and disappear when hit. Although Ike had his ike climber costume on, I think that was just for show to smokescreen from the real feature in the next build. Notice how he didn't get hit at all? Well if he did, then one of them will disappear in a puff of smoke similer to the pokemon when they are done using their attacks from the pokeball.. It would make sense because project M showed us the turbo item from last year, so maybe they are giving us the cherries as well. Also, notice how they didn't hit each other despite being in different costume? That could be part of it as well.
