Hello all, I'm Merrick, a very vocal aspiring Luigi player and tournament organizer and assistant of West Michigan tournaments, and I am here to tell you that ya'll are sheep. :happysheep:

I noticed a strong trend in the Smash 4 community in the last few months that is even more prevalent now than in the Brawl days. More so than ever, people are following this intensive bandwagon mentality that is seeping into every aspect of the Smash 4 community, particularly competitively where it has caught my eye the most.

There still remains these intense debates over whether Miis should be allowed to use all of their special moves or not in tournament play and some regions legality for them are drastically different than others. This in itself is not a problem if the reasoning behind it is good and dandy, but many seem to base their assumptions and thought process off someone higher in the social Smash food chain. I am not trying to call out anyone in a negative light by any means, but I think you all might know who I'm referring to in general on Twitter. People look up to certain top players because...well, they're very freaking good at what they do! And while their opinions certainly do have a say like anyone else, some word it painfully bad with the reasoning behind why they might dislike something, yet people eat up what someone amazing at Smash says and calls it a night.

I do not have specific tweets because god forbid I don't screenshot every last tweet from someone. It's largely known that the likes of some players like Zero and Vinnie greatly detest custom moves and Miis. But why do they? What have they contributed outside the god awful character space provided on Twitter? Anything that has led to constructive conversation other than saying something is dumb? I've seen incredibly detailed posts from less skilled players on why they think Final Destination, for instance, should be strictly a counterpick stage given how overly polarizing matchups are with the lack of platforms. They would highlight and explain in great detail why they think the way they think, which is awesome! You do not have to agree with a single darn thing said to know they put up a good argument for something they're passionate over. Taking this same example, all a top player has to do is say is Final Destination should be a counterpick stage and that's it. No more discussion (given the structure of Twitter and, again, the message length) beyond small comments and no reasoning or logic behind it. I wouldn't even be surprised how quickly people would point to that if I were to just discuss Final Destination in passing to a friend, and he or she would say "Naw man, it should be a counterpick because so and so said it should be."

People, I think we all need to do a better job of thinking for ourselves in our community. I am not exaggerating when I say how much influence some people have on the way you think of our rulesets and legal stages for instance, and it's worrisome because while I don't think their intentions are bad, their is obviously some effect higher folks have on us lesser plebs in general, and this mentality needs to be resolved. We can have nice discussions over things. Referring to another persons reasoning is fine if the reasoning itself is good and logical. We can do so much better in that regard.

Why is Samus bottom tier? Why do you want Town and City banned? Why are people so quick to jump aboard the bandwagon and spew out almost word by word what someone else has said? These are good things that spark discussion for people to ponder over. Your thoughts are your own, folks. I don't care if someone else thinks Samus is garbage, I don't want to hear their thoughts on the matter, I want to hear yours. You are your own self, and if I wanted to hear what Zero thinks, I would ask him, not you. :) Getting varied responses from multiple people with different ways of thinking is a good way to get a general consensus about an issue and just overall hear others opinions, but lately it feels as though people are perfectly content with going off the words of others in union.

What are your thoughts on this problem? Do you think there even is one at all? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

I haven't noticed any big issues concerning conformity/bandwagon near me, but I'm not a huge tournament player, so I can't say for sure if this is a real problem or not. :ohwell:

However, I have noticed quite a number of supporters behind big names like ZeRo and Nairo. While most of them don't appear to be brain-dead followers, there are a few people I know that commit themselves to every word and phrase that those skilled Smashers say or even vaguely mention. I definitely agree with you that it's foolish to simply accept someone's ideas, even if it's from amazing players, without a logical explanation or reasoning to back them up.

But to be honest, there are also flat-out haters that oppose those players. I know plenty of people that despise ZeRo for using high-tier characters such as Diddy and Sheik. They don't seem to know or care that ZeRo depends on winning tournaments to make a living. :c

Both hardcore fans and haters will exist no matter what happens, so whenever I encounter them I try to force them to listen to some reason. If that doesn't work, then I would simply ignore their biased opinions. If another argument and big names are referenced without a real explanation, then I think you can just either ask for a detailed explanation, or accuse them of being the conformists they are.

Also, I like being a sheep.:happysheep:

Yeah, I agree, but this is a problem with all of the games.
We should atleast try to consider everyone's opinion on something, but some people bandwagoning is inevitable, and it doesn't even necessarily always start with top players. In a few Youtube videos, in the comments, people seem to start to bandwagon the philosophy that the only Top and High tiers in Melee that anyone should play is Fox, Falco and Cpt. Falcon and you should feel bad if you don't play them, for example.
People start to adopt certain opinions simply because they feel like they need to belong to a group.
Honestly, everyone should try to form their own opinion. I started thinking Rosalina was OP early on based on what I saw she could do, instead of just following everyone that said she was.

Its not really an issue with just games either, but almost anything these days.

It is as FamilyTeam has stated, people will do it just so they can feel like they can belong. What better way to do that than agree with an opinion everyone else seems to be agreeing with just because someone popular and well known said so? You'd be surprised how many people are afraid of speaking their own opinions, especially if said opinion is considered "Unpopular" by a community or fandom.

Unfortunately enough I don't think there will ever be a way of stopping Bandwagoning because of this. It gets even worse when it involves someone influential or popular. Most fans will strongly believe these people will never be wrong and what they say should be followed.

It just boils down to how badly someone wants to fit in and how much they care about what others think of them.

As far as the Smash Community goes I can't say much there as I'm not really a competitive player. I've never been to or watched any Tournaments before and the only Top Player I know of is Zero because of how much he's mentioned. There's a few things I know of that I believe to be bandwagons (such as a lot of people holding such resentment to Sakurai) but I never really cared about that stuff.

People will have a lot of opinions about many things, and some of those opinions just catch on like wild fire. Let them debate over them no matter how silly they may be sometimes. I just want to enjoy the community for what it is and enjoy Smash like I've been doing.

If you're a person with a brain, you can figure out that following the every word of ZeRo or M2K is not gonna make you good, and having your own opinion is better than following trends. That's why there's people who play what they want and like the game, and idiots who only play top tiers or characters that "ZeRo reccomended" and are salty because "they lost to MegaMan with their Sheik".

Have your own mind people. It's good to follow, but better to have your opinion. You'll look like a confident person if you got that.
