Bad Wavedashing Habit - Need Help

So recently, I've found out that I have this bad habit when wavedashing. Normally, I use Y, R, and control stick down-right/left to wavedash. But I realized that my left hand has the tendency to flick the control stick very slightly upwards right before I flick downwards. This may be due to me wavedashing with tap jump in the past, but I'm very comfortable with the usage of Y now.

At first I was sure this wouldn't be too much of a problem. But I thought there would be a problem since inputting a tap jump along with Y would use my double jump before I wavedash. To test this assumption, I practiced Samus' wavedash. The reason I used Samus was because her first and second jump have distinct sounds. I noticed that when I wavedash, I hear Samus' second jump sound instead of her first jump sound. Is it possible that if i get hit out of my wavedash the way I currently input it, I might get hit out of my double jump and lose a jump?

I was wondering if this will continue to be a problem. Should I try to break out of my habit of flicking slightly upwards on my control stick?

hmm, i think it might be a slight problem, but not a huge issue. it shouldn't take that long to fix this, considering you managed to transition to tap jump to Y. you'd be a good yoshi player i guess.

Well that explains a lot. I was a Yoshi main when I first started out playing Melee.

I originally wavedashed with the control stick exclusively. I now use X almost always.

I entirely relate to your problem. It was a tough transition, and for a while I felt like I barely flicked the control stick (still do it sometimes), but it does go away. If you've been good enough to make the transition overall, you'll be good enough to stop flicking as well.

What led you two to start wavedashing using the control stick? Was it because you were still jumping using the stick at the time?

I answered a question that had similar properties couple weeks ago and basically what I told them was when you are playing THINK, don't just play and wavedash using muscle memory alone. Make a concious decision to wavedash when it is appropriate and also decide to not use this bad habit of yours.

If you hit the ground, you will get your second jump back (even if you are still sliding across the ground from the WD in landfallspecial.) If you get hit between your second jump and touching the ground, you will not get your jump back.

doesn't this also mean that you're slow? mid-air jump and airdodge both become possible on the first airborne frame (unless doublejumps can be buffered from ground somehow), so if you're airdodging on that frame, the doublejump shouldn't be happening i don't think. it depends which action takes precedence, i guess—which i'm not sure about... but if you can hear samus' double jump and/or see the ring, your wavedashes probably aren't frame tight anyway
