Is there a way to avoid this followup? I've been told to DI up but I can't remember if it has helped before.

Avoiding Usmash after Dair

DI up and in.
Lighter, floatier characters will start to fly too far at earlier percentages than heavier or more fast-falling characters, but there's always a percent range in which it's guaranteed since you won't even have the chance to tech the knockdown, no matter how you DI it. Same goes for weak nair to up smash, which is even more of a guarantee than dair to up smash, though it requires a bit more precision.
