the animation of him grabbing is what causes this. he is in fact a weird edge grabber but nonetheless great for mindgaemz. I hope I answered your question

I'm not sure if this is what is causing it or if it is a character-specific property of Ganon's up+B, but you can rise past the edge without grabbing at any time with any character by holding down when you get near it. (At least that is what I have read, I have not tested it myself.)

yes its true that ganon sometimes doenst sweet spot. from what ive noticed dragmire is correct it depends on when you start the b-up and the other thing he didnt mention is how close you are. sometimes if your not literally hugging the wall it will not sweet spot. so on stages like Final D and Lylat it is gonna be a little harder to sweet spot.

Can someone with Brawl avaliable test this? At what points in the Up B he auto sweet spot/doesn't? Or is it completely random?
Made some little testing and although the thing might not be straightforward, I wouldn't call it random.

Auto sweet spot mechanics clearly differ from one character to another. Lucario and DK would be grab the edge always, no matter how close to it they used it their ^B move. With Ganondorf however, if you're too close to the edge when doing Dark Dive you won't grab it. It's about distance where you could grab edge anyways. Otherwise you will auto sweet spot. This seemed to be with many other characters too.

What may be a bit annoying with Ganondorf though is if you hit any slope like edges (think of Melee's Final Destionation and how people recover there from down below with Marth and such, kind of sliding towards the wall) you will most likely just go past it without auto sweet spot. At least in Battlefield. In Animal Crossing level where slope isn't quite as steep he actually grabbed the edge at times but I couldn't control that. Can't really explain that much better with my English but hope you understood what I meant.
