(There is a TL:DR at the end if you just want to see my question, but the story below adds context to the situation)

Hey guys, so I attended my very first Smash4 tournament yesterday. To preface, I have been playing Smash since 64 but I never never played competitively in any of the Smash games until now. Still, I've played a lot, with friends, my brother, etc. to the point where I thought I was pretty good at the game, but had no real point of reference.

So going into this tournament yesterday I had no idea how I was going to do. I decided to main Pit as he is my most comfortable character to play and spent the past couple weeks practicing more than I ever have before. I watched pro videos, practiced combos and advanced techs, and any chance I had to get a game in I took it.

So fast forward to the tournament, 64 people signed up, after cancellations and no-shows I think the total roster numbered somewhere in the high 50's. It was single elimination, 3 stock, no timer, Final Destination. A pretty low key "locals" tournament - but the moment the games started I quickly identified about 6-8 people there who appeared to be quite good.

Anyways, moving along. I did better than I ever expected. My first two games were against fairly novice opponents who I defeated with ease, but as the roster shrunk I started playing against more talented players. In the quarter finals I faced a Captain Falcon that came right down to the final stock, sealing the win at 100+% damage when I challenged a forward smash with a Side-B (Super Armor for the win). Semi finals was against a Diddy who got an early two stock lead on me. I had to get through 3 stocks with only one left myself, but the comebacks were real and I fought tooth and nail and at 130% put that hoo-haw monkey out of commission. By the end of that match the entire crowd was chanting "Pit! Pit! Pit!" and I was told by the TO that it was one of the best Smash games he'd ever watched.

Yes! I made it to Grand Finals! Where I then played against the best Rob player I have ever seen and was quickly and effectively 3 stocked and made to look like a complete amature.

I was totally outclassed, he had reads on every move I made, I don't think I've ever felt so helpless in a match.

I mean yes it was my first competitive event, and I was estatic to take home the 2nd place prize, but I just found it hard to believe that I could be outclassed so decisively in the finals. I didn't expect to be the best, but I expected to at least put up a decent fight. But getting 3-stocked? I think I maybe put a total of 40% damage on him. Kind of an anti-climactic way to end a tournament.

Anyways, TL:DR - I feel like I've hit a plataeu here. I'm playing better than I ever have but it's not even close to good enough. Besides the obvious answer of "practice more", is there any advice competitive players out there give me to help me take my game to the next level? I know that without some video it's hard to analyse where I need to improve, so I'm looking at general suggestions on how to progress from a "very good" player to a "great" one.

Did you see Dabuz vs. Zero APEX Grand Finals? Stuff like this happens to the best players on Earth sometimes. Feel proud of taking 2nd in a fairly sizable tourney and don't worry about it. If you're doing that well you're already well on your way, and it just takes more time and practice. There's always someone out there that's better than you, and always something higher to strive for. Just take things one step at a time. Sometimes I feel the same way when I'm up against someone I just can't beat, but it's best not to let it get to you and focus on improving yourself.

R.O.B. mains tend to be incredible. I know all about it.
