Or in other words, some of my many ideas for assist trophies.
KENSUKE KIMACHI
The protagonist of the 1080 Snowboarding franchise, Kensuke Kimachi is an expert of Japanese descent and is featured on the boxart for most of the series´ installations. He is one of the most balanced characters, and thusly preferred by beginners.
Kensuke was a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but his franchise has yet to see any active representation in the game. When summoned as an Assist Trophy, Kensuke would freely snowboard across the stage, ramming into foes and instantly freezing them. Alternately, he could bring an avalanche crashing down on the stage.
PADDLE
The Paddle is the closest thing that Alleyway has for a main character. Alleyway was a single game released for the Game Boy much in the style of all those paddle games where you have to bounce a ball back to hit an assortment of suspended blocks. The Japanese boxart shows the Paddle as a high-tech silver sort of gadget.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, once the Paddle was summoned it would find its place in front of the summoner (the Paddle would be about as tall as Kirby), slowly moving up and down. For as long as the Paddle remains, it will reflect projectiles fired at the summoner from the front.
CARDBOARD CUTOUTS
In the arcade light gun game Hogan´s Alley, you had to shoot down the bad guys without causing casualties with the police or civilians. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, once the Cardboard Cutouts are summoned three cardboard robbers and one cardboard policemen will be propped up on random locations of the stage. It takes one hit of anything to knock them down. Whoever knocks down the third bad guy will recover all damage, if the policeman hasn´t been knocked down before.
Hogan´s Alley never had a real protagonist (more than you, who holds the light gun), therefore it seemed fitting to include the Cardboard Cutouts as an Assist Trophy instead (which also makes for a more original effect, after all).
CUPID
Sennen Kazoku was a relatively recently released game, solely in Japan, by Nintendo. It has you playing as an angel who is charged with taking care of a family who God has taken special interest in. Through the use of your love arrows and other magical powers, you will have to influence the family´s doings in order to make them as happy as possible. As with other games like Animal Crossing, the game moves on even when you don´t play it, and leaving it to collect dust for a few months may result in a number of things happening without you knowing.
The Cupid would use his renowned Love Arrows in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, shooting a single enemy before disappearing. The targeted player glows with a rosey tint and becomes unable to damage others with attacks until the effects fade.
URBAN CHAMPION
The nameless protagonist of the we-don´t-need-plot-if-you-can-punch-fellow-delinquents-into-manholes vintage classic, the Urban Champion needs to see some form of representation in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Like many other Assist Trophies listed (or to be listed) here, he has potential to be a full-fledged playable character, but the odds are more than stacked against him.
Once summoned, the Urban Champion would be a more aggressive and manly version of Marill. Punching and kicking the closest enemy without remorse, he would force them to the edge of the stage, and then dismiss them with a mighty kick. Obviously it´s escapable, but still highly threatening. Sometimes the Urban Champion will be summoned with a crowbar in hand, in which case his onslaught will be more brutal, frequent and longer-ranged.
UFO SWARM
Another forgotten one-game franchise, To The Earth was a light gun game where the player had to aim and shoot at an endless, incoming swarm of alien spaceships headed for terra firma. It was a lot more relentless than other zapper titles at the time, but not exactly the most enduring.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the UFO Swarm would do what one expects it to do when summoned: crash. A steady torrent of some good ten to fifteen spaceships, each about the size of Bowser, would crash into random platforms and parts of the stage, some missing and plummeting to the abyss. Each of them would be as quick and powerful as a Warp Star, guaranteeing to leave chaos and destruction in their wake.
METROID
A very expected Assist Trophy, the Metroid is the eponymous extraterrestrial parasitical lifeform that Samus combats in her many exploits. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl it would be a bit smaller than Kirby once summoned. It would lazily move through the air until an opponent gets too close, at which point it would latch onto/him her and steadily increase their damage percentage. If the opponent is hit enough times, the Metroid will fall off an disappear. An ice-elemental attack will instantly destroy the Metroid.
HAKKUN
The idyllic islanders surrounded by an unnamed sea are suddenly wrought with concern when the eternal rainbow over their island begins to fade and ultimately disappear. Desperate to restore the rainbow to its former glory, they ask Hakkun, the only inhabitant up to the task, to gather the broken pieces of the arch and put them back together in the sky. This is the plot of Sutte Hakkun, another standalone Nintendo game that has seen no representation in the company´s biggest cross-franchise medley.
In the game, Hakkun could absorb the liquid from different things through his proboscis, then spit it out, having different effects. Much like in the original adventure Hakkun would stick to the place he was summoned on and suck the contents of the platform, spitting them out at foes in a total of five shots. The effects of the attack would depend on the nature of the platform. If Hakkun landed on a stone floor, the attacks would be powerful and ensue in an exploding shot of dirt and rock. If ice, the shots would freeze intercepted opponents. If Hakkun happened to land on a hazardous portion of stage, such as Brinstar´s acid sea, it would have particularly devastating consequences.
MR. X
Even though Bald Bull made his debut as a boxer in the classic Punch-Out, he was also the final challenger in a spin-off of the franchise called Arm Wrestling, which wasn´t quite as successful. An arcade game, you had to continually press buttons and watch your opponents´ expressions to beat them in arm wrestling matches. The last opponent you faced was the mysterious Mr. X, a man concealed by a mask who, when said mask flies out if you beat him in the match, is revealed to be none other than Bald Bull.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. X would work quite uniquely. As soon as he is summoned, he will rush to a single opponent and the screen will zoom into the two, who will commence an arm wrestling match. The other players can´t do anything while this is going on. The player must continually press A as fast as he/she can to beat Mr. X. If he/she wins, Mr. X will be knocked down and his mask will fly out, but if he wins the opponent will receive massive damage.
PROFESSOR KAWASHIMA
Professor Kawashima is the unlikely protagonist of Nintendo´s Brain series, which is aimed at all kinds of audiences and seeks to expand their demographic. He´s a real-life Japanese neurosurgeon, too.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Professor Kawashima´s floating head would move to the background like Andross. However, in front of the Professor an arithmetic equation would appear on the foreground, in the format of "__ +/- __ = __" hovering in the air. This equation will always be incorrect in the beginning, such as 3 - 1 = 4. By hitting any of the three digits or the plus/minus symbol, you can change them. As soon as the equation is changed to a correct one, Professor Kawashima will congratulate you and a myriad of healing items will drop from the sky. The number and effectiveness of the items will depend on the time it took to solve the equation. This Assist Trophy would actually require the cooperation of the summoner and the other fighters in order to receive his rewards.
BARBARA THE BAT
From Band Brothers, a rhythm game for the DS only released in Japan, comes the protagonist Barbara the Bat. She´s part of a band, mind you, and it´s also a possibility that her little brother and her friend would appear along with her, but I couldn´t find any pictures of them so well.
Once summoned, Barbara would begin to jam with her guitar in place, swinging her head and producing yellow waves of sound that would extend in circles from her guitar. Like Donkey Kong´s Final Smash, the intensity and frequency of the waves would depend on the song that she is playing, which comes from the game´s extensive repetoire. As a bonus, the song that Barbara begins to play would keep playing for the rest of the match, even after her parting.
DUCK FLOCK
Coming from one of the most famous retro Nintendo games, the Duck Flock would fly out of the bushes and quickly scamper out of the screen, while you were challenged to shoot them out of the clouds through the use of the zapper gun. Once fallen, your dog would bring them to you, stiffling a chuckle.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Duck Flock would spring out of nowhere and start flying across the stage, much like the Unown swarm in SSBM (which was a Beedrill swarm in SSB). Blasts of energy would begin to occur in random parts along the ducks´ path, as if someone was shooting at the screen with the zapper. None of the ducks would be hit, but the shots pose a significant danger to players caught in the flurry.
More Assist Trophies will be added gradually. Stay tuned for updates, and please comment.
