Hello. I am proud to say that I am asian, but whitewashed in America (lol).

THIS THREAD IS NOT BEING RACIST!

But there are some things people don't understand:

Q: Why are asians ****** us at SAT's? THEY'RE TOO SMART!

A: This is generally because many asians are being forced to excel in school in order to have lots of money, so that their parents can brag that their kids are great. Many parents set the standard too high for children, depriving them of their social lives due to immense studying. Which makes them smart. So, it's their parents that make their children smart.

Q: Why do asians excel at fighter games? I am good, but it almost comes natural to you guys. [Courtesy of Slave1]

A: This is just a guess, but I think it has to do with their lack of a social life (I have one though =] ). Since their ENTIRE social life has been ruined (see question 1), they try to relate and to boost their own moral by games. The extra time they have off they can't spend with their friends because they have none. And fighter games probably make them feel like MEN, not nerds.

I'm asian. I've done Taekwondo for 10 years since I was about 5. I think I got the spacing from that LOL. I'm pretty short, so I use my legs a lot to keep my distance from taller people. IDK. Just a thought.
Well, I can't think off the top of my head, so I'll leave it to you.

Ask a question about asians!

I can understand how intense studying would make someone good at social science or biology or chemistry, but I see a lot of Asians dominating in purely mathematical studies, which you really can't study for. What cultural practices allow so many Oriental students to be so good at math.

I understand the racial undertones this question poses, but the fact is that different ethnicities have different cultures which allows people (for the most part) to excel at different activities. This fails to explain math though, IMO. I know I study a lot harder than my friend Chunkong Lo, but he definitely pulls in better scores. In fact, as I'm taking senior level courses, I find that Asian names comprise ~ 80% of the class roster.

Again sorry if this crosses the line. I don' mean to be offensive; just asking whether my observations are relevant, and if so, why they exist.

BIG blob of text.

For math, it's not studying per se, it's INTENSE REVIEWING. I think of them as the same thing. Also, asian kids grasp numbers better than writing, because it's universal.

Sry, can you ask smaller, non-confusing questions?

I personally don't know, but I think its because we enjoy math. Ask all of your Asian classmates if they enjoy it. If you enjoy what you are doing, you will do well in that. I love human nature.

You're right about Asians primarily dominating in mathematics.

I'm not sure if this is the exact reason, but it is for myself, my brothers and several of my asian friends. I'm assuming it's because since a very young age, our parents have always taught us higher level math. For example, i started doing fractions when we were learning simple addition in school. Once I got old enough, my dad got me to teach my younger brother how to do quadratic equations and the like when he we in elementary. So on and so forth. As well, in China, categories of math are taught much earlier, (for example, calculus is already taught in grade 10).

Also, since it's more logistical and less memorization and interpretation, we have an easier time excelling at it.

And yes, it's more to do with reviewing everything.

Also, made this for fun: http://www.smashboards.com/group.php?groupid=1091

This seems to be a bad idea. I can see topics like "The White Thread," arising as a joke. The LGBT thread exists because of the stigma associated with them that what they are is a choice and immoral. That thread serves as more of a sanctuary than anything, whereas this seems to seek to write about stereotypes.

If you want to make a group about and filled with Asians, that's fine. But we can't have threads for every lifestyle, denomination or ethnicity here. Sorry :(
