Are the Amiibo region locked?

Going by the pricing of the Amiibo in the UK and Australia I listed here:http://smashboards.com/threads/amiibo-information-pricing-and-pictures.365774/#post-17473362

UK
£10.99 each for a total of £131.88
Converted to US$ (with today's rates) that is: $18.08 and $216.90

Australia
$17.95 each for a total of $215.40
Converted to US$ (with today's rates) that is: $16.77 and $201.23

Compared to the US:
$12.99 and $155.88.

With today's rates:
The UK is 39% more expensive and Australia is 29% more expensive.

My question is are the Amiibo region locked?
I ask this because depending on the shipping, it just might be cheaper to get the Amiibo from the USA. But that only works if they are not region locked and work with all the different regions WiiU and SSB4 games.

I know the New 3DS is region locked but not sure about the amiibos. I doubt it personally.

I don't know. I don't think so but who knows. I know for the Pokemon Rumble on WiiU, I imported some Japanese NFC figures for cheap and they worked just fine on my NA WiiU.

Unless certain amiibos only came out in certain countries, I don't think it would be a problem.

It will be a major blow if they region lock on local play, and even amiibo.
Why they have to region lock in amiibo? This is just ridiculous.

I'd imagine they'd have to be, since the US/PAL/NTSC versions of the game will likely have different code as always. A reasonable, strategic interpretation of learned data in the US version could easily be a panicked fit in the PAL version.
