Hey guys,

My friend and I are really into teams and I haven't been able to find the answer to this anywhere.

If we wanted to team up, online or locally, can we do it in For Glory mode or just in Random Matchup? Do we have to add people and play with only friends, or can we just team up online and play against random opponents?

Thanks for the responses in advance. :)

Alas, that is not currently an option in For Glory mode. You can still team with friends, but (as far as I've seen), can only team with random players in For Glory. The most obvious reason is the difficulty in balancing matches between two teams consisting of players of different skills.

Hopefully they patch it in at a later date, I too enjoy teaming with specific players.

lol, there's no skill based matchmaking system. If there is, then it doesn't work at all.

They have team mode but you can only join it solo and then it matches you up with three other players.
Teams are decided at random. They mix them up sometimes after the match. You fight for two minutes or whatever it is. No friendly fire. Everyone is blind pick.
It's pretty fun.

I wish you could team with a friend i had people i was ready to pair up with. It is a good test to see how well you work together as a team.

No, but go on miiverse and make a post to do team battles against people for now.

Ever play Dota or any other game with team matchmaking? Stuff takes a long time and a lot of resources to get right. Far more than I imagine Nintendo wants to spend on it, when, as people often point out, 1v1 is more popular anyway.

Heck, Valve HAS the time and resources and it's still rare to have a really even match.

Team matchmaking is an industry standard, and is available in almost every single online game released in the last few years with teamplay. For a triple-a title like Smash, there is no excuse.

And we're talking about 2v2 matchmaking here. It's either random teammates on both sides (already exists), or two pre-formed parties on both sides (the framework is already there). It's literally the easiest team matchmaking system possible. I'm sorry, but there's barely anything holding Nintendo back.

From what I understand, 1v1 in Smash 4 has no skill-based matchmaking anyway.

Suppose I, moderately experienced but not pro, team with a friend of mine, brand new to the game. Where should it match us?

I agree it's a standard and SHOULD happen, but if of when it does, I do not want to hear any crying from anyone about it being uneven. Unless you force teammates to have a certain proximity of internally-rated skill, either one player will single-handedly wipe the other team out, or one player will be dead weight against two good opponents. Unless both are approximately equally skilled, which isn't at all guaranteed for probably 90% of users.

To find one skill rating to match with you can:
  • average the skills of the pair
  • use the highest skill in the party
  • maintain a unique skill rating for every unique pair of players
The third option is by far the best and has been proven many times to work, but if Nintendo has to take the easiest route the first two (or a combination thereof) will work. It seems that Sakurai didn't factor skill-based matchmaking into Smash 4 anyway so it barely matters, uneven 2v2's will happen just as often as uneven 1v1's and FFA's. The only difference is, you can't do it with a friend.

Well, again, I'm all for it, bad matchmaking or not. But while the team average rating works best (and is indeed what most things use), it's still far from perfect.

As for skill-based matchmaking, at first I agreed with the observation that it seems irrelevant, but I've been watching more people play online, and the majority of the games do seem fairly even, though one cannot account for character inexperience when matchmaking.

Well I think that assigning a rank to each unique pair is much better than using an average, but yeah.

Watching Zero's stream, people seem to actually fight back so maybe there is skill-based matchmaking. It's hard to tell.
