Are Amiibos region-locked?

One one hand, they could be like Skylanders, free to use in any region. On the other, they could be region-locked like everything else Nintendo releases...

Does anyone know this for sure?

IGN and GameXplain have long since confirmed that Amiibos aren't region locked.
