Hey, so after playing casually for several years, I thought I would try my hand at competitive play with my main Fox. I haven't been doing too badly in online matches, but im having some troubles approaching. Typically, I do one of 3 things, dash attack, SH nair, or grab. Dash attack is working the best right now, but it gets really predictable and doesn't do alot of damage. Nair is good damage but to get the 9% damage, I have to hop pretty close to them, which gives them a lot of time to attack. In general, how should I be approaching as Fox?

You can also use RAR Auto Cancel Bair into grab at low percents. From there you can do D-throw into Fair for a decent amount of damage. Cross up Nair to U-tilt at low percents which then combos into either a grab, or upsmash. And of course, if you choose the grab option, you can go D-throw, into Fair for decent damage once again. And at about 40-80 you can combo nair to dash attack, or nair to upsmash if you want the damage. Just stay on the move always. And if you have the opening to shoot lasers, do it.

Don't be afraid to do a couple dashes into just rolling backward or crouching to cancel your momentum. Your opponent may throw out an attack that hits nothing., or it may lead to you being able to punish them. But these empty dashes are important for keeping your approaches unpredictable. Mix it up.

You can force approach with lasers. You can also fair to approach - it basically seems to be Smash 4's replacement for Fox's dair. Since his Dair now is pretty punishable due to landing lag.
Fair has landing lag too, but more range so you can space it
