Anyone remember Brawl+ from long ago?

This game is kinda comparable to that. That mod was aiming to create a happy medium between Melee and Brawl by keeping most of the basic mechanics while increasing the speed and removing the air dodge hitstun cancelling to allow for combos.

Of course, we know that a schism in the development team led to the conception of its more popular child, Project M.

Am I right?

No, you're wrong. This game isn't like Brawl+ at all. I was hoping it would be, but it really isn't.

Instead it's more like a watered down version of Balanced Brawl. Now does anyone here remember that mod? XD

How is it watered down? It's faster, actually allows for combos, and limits most defensive strategies.

Balanced Brawl tried to keep the slow, combo-free, turtly gameplay (plus I'm trying to get everyone to use that AND Melee SD Remix as tournament options).

Sorry, but I haven't seen so much as a single actual true and natural combo that doesn't rely on slipping off of an edge or other things similar. Balanced Brawl did actually add enough hitstun needed for combos in it's later versions alongside tweaking the characters and making things a little faster.

In Brawl+ and PM, there aren't any tricks to doing combos or anything. You just go in, do the moves and make them connect. Sm4sh? Please, most of the time, your opponent will constantly air-dodge or get knocked away too far for you to follow up with anything outside of now percentages and even then, most of those combos either involve using the same move several times and then hoping a different move lands, or is just a combo of 2 to 3 hits. 4 if you're lucky.

Defensive strategies are definitely still the winners in Sm4sh since it's more about how you gimp the other person during from attack rather then starting an initial attack yourself, as I found out the hard way. It's almost as if in Sm4sh, attacking first will more than likely automatically put you at a disadvantage. It's just that unlike Brawl, where it was about how much you stay away from the opponent, it's all about counters here, so it's different from Brawl and Melee. Just more similar to the former than the latter.

I suppose it works for the game being what it is itself, but Brawl+ this ain't. I've played every released build of B+, including the Nightly Builds, and I used to play it religiously for hours every single day every week and month all the way up until PM came out and I can tell you that Sm4sh is nothing close to Brawl+ in terms of it's fighting mechanics or it's speed.

It's faster than Brawl, I'll give it that, but not by much. B+ is still faster. Hell, Brawl Minus is faster, but that's not much of a comparison at all.

Sm4sh is still a fun enough game, though. I like it. <3

Anywho, that's all I have to say on that matter. What Sm4sh said it was going to do and what it actually did are two entirely different things.

I'm done. Everyone else, enjoy your discussion.

Kaye Cruiser nailed it. I actually don't like Smash 4 at all unlike him/her, but everything they said was right.

Pretty sure I'm a guy. ¦D

I just like Sm4sh solely as a game itself for what it is. It'll be fun to mess around in a bit with my friends.

I won't be playing it nearly to the extent that I've played Brawl+ or how I currently play PM, though. Those have satisfied my Party Game and Fighting Game needs simultaneously. That, and I really don't like playing Sm4sh online at all.

I personally am a huge Brawl Minus fan (because I was a 64 player for a decade, I skipped Melee) but I think Project M is pretty cool, I've just gotten so used to not L-cancelling/other things I just don't have the time to get the muscle memory for that stuff going again. :(
