When I first heard about FD mode at the direct, I can't say that I was way too excited. But I did think it was a cool enough concept since something did strike me. How the online was in Brawl when I got on, it would always select to FD making things very stale. So now, it was in being placed into an entirely different mode, cool? Right?
Well, not to me actually. To be frank, I'm actually so sick of Final Destination now. I don't mind it when I see it in high level play as it's been a staple ever since Melee, but now, it feel like it developed a sort of attitude among players to only select the FD stages.
While fighting others on a Twitch stream, I've come to realize how much more I get into the competitive spirit when I play on stages such as battlefield and Smashville with people willing to play on those stages in high level play. It's because of how much fun the platforms are and creates a competitive feel for me. That something could happen which I least expect and getting punished for it. Or pulling off an awesome back air with the Falcon while running off unexpectedly off a platform. Just experiences that I couldn't get on FD stages.
Even some of the more 'for fun' stages that are meant to be played for fun, unserious play, my small group of friends who don't really play on the same level as me refuse to play on. This is because the for Glory is promoting this very sickening way of playing that makes the fights so boring which involves a combination of dodge rolling and throwing out Smashes or projectile spamming on FD stages. But when I select a stage meant for a four way, or a three way free for all fun getting some fresh air for a change, it leads to "That stage is terrible, who picked that stage!?" Only because they can't pull off the same strategies they could use in the For Glory mode.
Smash 4 Wii U honestly brought back a lot of stages that I took I liking to and a lot were introduced which I liked. I admit, I have my share of stages I heavily dislike, but it's honestly my favorite roster of stages in the series thus far, but it's just been a real shame that way too much time is being spent on FD stages on my end and I feel the For Glory mode is heavily promoting this behavior of always needing to win due to the record recorder that honestly doesn't mean anything, even if it's by means of predictable strategy that's more or less just frustrating to counter in an online setting and making matches so boring
I just had to vent, sorry if anyone like this idea and their experience has been all good. But does anyone share my feelings towards this idea? Or maybe something similar to this experience that wasn't too positive.
PS: some of my favorite stages within Smash 4 (The obvious two I like for competitive play, some I like for fun play) are Port Town Aero dive, Battlefield & Smashville, Warioware inc, Lylat cruise, Orbital gate, Norfair, Both Pokemon stages, Skyloft, and Mario Galaxy. Might as well list those off to end on a positive note =D
