I wanna know if I'm alone on this. Smash 4's character portraits (At least the 3DS version as far as we know) have the closest/most zoomed in character portraits in the series, likewise when selecting different colours it's hard to tell which is which since you can only see part of the character (Like mostly their face/torso). The characters that most notably suffer from this are Ike, Ganondorf, Marth, Palutena, Falco, Lucina, Little Mac, Samus, Shulk, and to a lesser extent Dark Pit and Sheik.

Of course single colour characters don't suffer from this (Yoshi, Kirby, Pikachu etc.) but even then some of Jigglypuff's hats are mostly obscured too. Am I alone on this?

Whoops, I made a thread just like this. I should've glanced the front page first. You can see a zoomed-in version in the customization menu, but as far I can tell you can't switch outfits on this screen. This is unfortunate, since many fighting games have this problem; and it seems like it could be very easily fixed. Either you can't see outfits as you're selecting them, or you can't see them clearly until a match actually starts. Likewise for seeing tracks in racing games and so on.

Pac Man has this problem you can only see his gloves and shoes a tiny bit while changing to alt costumes.

Considering I use custom moves, I go to the Custom section in the Games & More, pick a character, and press L/R until I get the costume/color I want after I make the custom set. It's great because you get a more zoomed out look. Won't help with Jiggs though, since the hat is still going to be obscured due to the angle of Jigg's artwork

Ooh yeah, looking at the characters through the custom menu is far better.

...Not practical, but at least you can see more of the artwork than just their face.

If only you could switch outfits there or if this was some feature somewhere (preferably at character select screens).

Sometimes, I wish that Smash's CSS would go back to the way that Smash 64 had. In which you saw the 3D model itself at the bottom.

Only reason why they used to be able to is because it wasn't a problem loading every character model into the character select screen, there weren't many and they were relatively low-poly.

Perhaps Smash 5 will see the return of 3D character select models with better console hardware.

True. Maybe the WiiU version will at least zoom out the character art a bit so we can see the palette swaps better.

I getcha. The blue-skinned Ganondorf looked cool in the portrait but his armor colors weren't to my liking. It's faster to use the custom character screens to see how the colors look in-game.
