I play Roy, Link, and Ness in Melee and want to start Wavedashing, but I see no purpose in it. I can wavedash, but I don't know why I should do it.

It gives you better mobility, spacing, can do Smash attacks during it, and also an great way to edgehog faster.

Imagine that you play Roy and someone (any character) fsmashes your shield. The shield pushback is so strong that your opponent is out of your shieldgrab range.
What would you do to punish that fsmash?

I'd probably run back to him and counter before he hits me.

If you've just shielded an attack, you cannot let go of shield and immediately run like you can in Brawl and Smash 4. Releasing your shield takes ~15 frames, and only then would you be able to start moving forward. By jumping out of shield and airdodging immediately (wavedashing), you start moving much more quickly.

Other uses to think about:
- For some characters, wavedashing is simply faster than running.
- You can move backwards without having to turn around (useful for grabbing the ledge).
- Towards the end of your wavedash, you are still moving, but are out of landing lag and can actually attack while moving (watch Luigi players approach with tactics such as WD up smash).

Wavedashing is an awesome movement option that gives you a myriad of possibilities. It's fast, and anything can be done out of it, making it better than a dash for characters with good wd lengths, like Marth.
