I play Roy, Link, and Ness in Melee and want to start Wavedashing, but I see no purpose in it. I can wavedash, but I don't know why I should do it.

I'd probably run back to him and counter before he hits me.Imagine that you play Roy and someone (any character) fsmashes your shield. The shield pushback is so strong that your opponent is out of your shieldgrab range.
What would you do to punish that fsmash?
If you've just shielded an attack, you cannot let go of shield and immediately run like you can in Brawl and Smash 4. Releasing your shield takes ~15 frames, and only then would you be able to start moving forward. By jumping out of shield and airdodging immediately (wavedashing), you start moving much more quickly.I'd probably run back to him and counter before he hits me.
