Hi, I was wondering if there were any tips you guys could give on how to get better at Smash 4. It seems that with most of the time I practice for quite a bit, I think I can win a few matches, but I lose a lot. I usually main Marth (but am looking to have Mega Man as a secondary main.) Thanks for reading!

Well Marth had his hey-day in Melee and to a lesser extent Brawl, but he's still a pretty good character :)

You asked quite a general question so you're probably gonna get quite general advice. I used to never play anyone beside Marth and Falco, but I think I got a lot better once I started rolling random characters when casually playing. This is because I was always looking for when/if certain moves were effective. Constantly playing different characters also gets you a bit more experienced in the indirect skills in Smash, e.g. how to space, how to approach and getting more comfortable with some character's difficult recoveries, because every character is different in those respects. Then when I went back to my main I had a lot more skills in the repertoire.

Watch top players on youtube a lot too!

If you go into a for glory free for all, you can practice against skilled people without so much attention directed to you

Marth is a difficult character to use. He has a sweetspot at the tip of his sword that's pretty hard to hit. The sweet spot does a ton of damage and knockback, but the rest of his sword is pretty weak to balance it. If you can't hit with it consistently, I'd suggest trying out Lucina.

You don't have to practice to get good. In fact, I'd say that practice you're doing isn't doing anything to make you better. If you want to get better, think critically.

1.) Watch videos of or fight against someone who's better than you
2.) Pay attention to what, why, and when they're doing things.
3.) Try to play with that information in the front of you mind.
4.) It'll give you better fighting sense in general and help you develop good strategies and habits to mix into your natural playstyle.
