I played Mario Party 6 the other night with some friends on a gamecube and had a blast. I read that you can play gamecube games on wii u with homebrew. Has anyone tried it?

I have and it works great. No issues. I don't want to overstep my bounds by the moderators on this topic, so that's all I will say.

If you only install the Homebrew Channel, it will be completely harmless. You won't be able to load Wii games, but you have nintendont and plenty of other emulators to try. I am currently playing some RPGs that I missed back in the day, such as Terranigma (terrific SNES game), Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Tales of Symphonia. Playing with the Pro controller is awesome.

Will I lose my ability to download from the nintendo store? Will the console still get updates from Nintendo? Will I be able to play online?

No, yes, yes. The Wii mode is self-contained and anything you install there will not affect to the rest of the console. Of course, just be careful any everything will be okay.
